Remember the draft of ‘54? All the teams had high hopes for their picks. Most of those hopes were crushed. Sorry folks this is going to be a rough one. Let’s go back 10 years to the draft of 2054.
And With the First Pick- The Pittsburgh Pirates select CF- Roberto Costello. Costello now 28 has played close to 1,000 games in the minor leagues, while only playing 76 at the Major League level and last playing in the Show in 2061 for the Blue Jays. He is currently toiling in the Warhounds farm system waiting for another chance to achieve the stardom that was predicted for him.
Best Career (So Far)- Oakland snagged the gem of the draft when they took Andres Ortiz with the 3rd pick. Ortiz has established himself as the premier shortstop in the AL. A great pick by the Athletics.
Biggest Bust- The Blue Jays drafted Mike Kennedy with the 2nd pick overall, but couldn't get him to come to terms with as Kennedy enrolled in Oral Roberts to play college ball. This turned into a good thing for the Jays as the now 28 year old pitcher has been a career minor leaguer and is currently waiting for the call in the Rockies system.
I do want to share one more bust story. The number 4 pick overall Artie Hebert pitched in 1 Major League game for the Indians and got the win before retiring at the age of 29 with a record of 1-0.
Great Value- The 2nd best player in this draft wasn't taken until the 13th round- the number 417th player taken. Nice job by the Angels grabbing Wayne Dorsett so late in the draft
Last Man Standing-Yankees reliever Nick Landry has pitched in the Bronx parts of the last 2 seasons making that climb to the Majors from a starting point of the 14th round.
Best Overall Draft- It was difficult to find any team that had multiple productive picks from this draft. After a long search I settled on awarding the best overall draft to the Royals for their picks of Shane Sandoval and Millard Valdez
Will the 2055 draft be any better? Tune in next season for another Draft from the Past.
