Wow how time flies! Another season is about to get underway, but before we move forward- let's look back. Back to the draft of 2052..
And With the First Pick- The Carolina Warhounds select CF- Miguel Angel Andrade. The Hounds traded up to select number 1 overall for the second time in three years. They were not disappointed, this sweet swinging center fielder progressed quickly through the ranks and was starting in Carolina in less than two years. Was he the right choice for number 1? Well….....
Best Career (So Far)- Andrade proved worthy of being the number one pick. He has been durable and consistent. He has led the NL in stolen bases six consecutive seasons. Andrade is a 3x All-Star, twice a Gold Glove recipient and finished second in MVP voting in 2060. There were a couple of other outstanding players to consider for best in class. Bill Smith drafted 5th is a 2x All-star with a Rookie of the Year award and Luis Hernandez was selected number 11 by Boston. Hernandez has also won a Rookie of the Year award and has made 3 All-Star game appearances.
.
Biggest Bust- There was an audible gasp of surprise when then the Twins selected high school hurler Jerry Crockett with the 10th pick of the draft. Many scouts were skeptical about his potential and the skeptics were proven right as Crockett struggled and failed to reach the big leagues.
Great Value- He wasn’t drafted until the 8th round by the Cubs but Joe Tearlach has far exceeded everyone’s expectations. The left handed swinging third baseman has become one of the league’s most consistent power sources with back to back 40 home run campaigns. A great find at number 263.
Last Man Standing- You can call him Mr.Perseverance, not drafted until the 15th round- Myles Joseph has toiled in the Dodgers farm system for 10 seasons. The now 31 year old shortstop did play 26 games in the Show in 2057 and 2058, and even now refuses to let his dreams die.
Best Overall Draft- The Tampa Bay Rays came away with two solid players in Mario Collazo and Paul Graham earning them best draft honors.
As always thank you for taking this trip back to the past with me. I’ll see here again next season.
