Hey it’s that time again - time to turn back the clocks 10 years and look back at the draft of 2053.
And With the First Pick- The Oakland Athletics select CF- Robbie Harvey. Drafted out of high school at the age of 19, it took Harvey 7 years to make the major leagues. While he has established himself as a respectable starting corner outfielder he certainly has never justified his 1st pick overall choice.
Best Career (So Far)- Five All Star appearances and back to back MVP awards puts David Peters at the top of this class. Peter’s was selected 5th by the Pirates. He quickly established himself as a superstar in Pittsburgh before being dealt to Arizona in a blockbuster deal. Peters appears to be on a path to Cooperstown.
Biggest Bust- There is no shortage of candidates for this dubious honor within the top 5 picks. The number 3 pick was a right handed pitcher Pepe Gonzalez selected by the Angels. A search of the PBL archives reveals no information about him. What became of Pepe? I like to think he took his bonus money and ran off to a tropical island. For players that got some playing time the Cubs pick of Chad Murdock at number 2 and the number 5 Tigers pick of Jeff Jenkins are choices that would likely be made differently if they got another chance
Great Value- While there may have been a lot of pitching busts in the first round, the Twins dug deep through their scouting reports and the steal of the draft grabbing Jake Meacha in the 9th round. The lefty Meacha has earned a spot at the top of the Twins rotation. A lofty accomplishment for 278th pick.
Last Man Standing- Once we get to the 27th pick of the 15th round- most of us are ready to call it a day. But not so quick because that’s where the Rangers found pitcher Stu Welsh. Stu got himself into 45 games with the Cardinals in 2060 & 2061.
Best Overall Draft- The Pirates choice of Peters propelled them to best draft honors of what could be best called a mundane draft class.
As always thank you for taking this trip back to the past. I’ll see you all here again next season.
