I do love me some defensive baseball. Give me a 2-1 game over 12-10 any day. That being said watching the entire league bat .187 would hugely suck. Derek or Anthony, can one of you confirm? Have we overridden some of the default league settings? Honestly I have never played a solo league and have never taken time to become familiar with league level settings and options so I am not really sure what I am even asking. I know Rangers referenced them earlier in this thread. Ron, thanks for including this topic in this thread. It appears that something needs to be adjusted. At the very least we should investigate the cause; but it certainly appears that something needs to be done to return to "normalcy." For a link to some recent posts on this click here. Also, below is the summary of batting average and ERA results for the past two seasons. ow did you get that info out of curiosity?

I have reached out to Terry, Peter and Kevin along with another recruit from Danny in hopes of quickly filling 4 voids. Our current situation would look like this: •Chicago White Sox -tentatively taken •Minnesota Twins - tentatively taken •Tampa Bay Rays - tentatively taken •Chicago Cubs •Kansas City Royals •Washington Nationals I have reached out to Terry and he would have his choice of teams. TEAMS BEING RUN UNDER TEMPORARY GM: San Diego Padres - Ron We have had 4 requests for a second team. Shane being one and he will receive first option on any vacant team. Shane has been a huge help in finding GMs since day one of the PBL and this is why I made this decision, it has nothing to do with his unfair ability to win at this game. If all goes well we will have one more void to fill and we can do that temporarily and quickly. I am hoping for some commitments rather quick. Fantastic news! It will be great to have some more new talent in the league. Will there be any restrictions on the "Shadow GM's" in so far as how they run their teams? And could be post a "sticky" of what teams remain available and what teams are being doubled? Basically what you have above (once the newbs are hooked up) but not just in this thread. That way we can all help to recruit, knowing how many we need? Again, Great news for PBL, Can't wait to get going again.

In case any of the new guys are interested, here's my rundown of the available teams:
Chicago White Sox: By far the most competitive team available. You know how I know? They made the playoffs last year without anyone actually running the team. Some very strong major leaguers, though their minor leagues lacks superstar prospects.
Minnesota Twins: Has a couple good, cheap star players. Their farm system is a B- to B, with their best guys still being 2 to 3 years from the majors. Lots of potential, but in a rougher division behind both the Indians and the White Sox.
Tampa Bay Rays: A perennial playoff contender, though part of that is due to a weaker AL South division. They've made it to the playoffs 4 years running and seem positioned to keep it up. Like the other contenders, their farm system is lighter than you might like.
Chicago Cubs: Very very thin at the Majors. But they've been collecting high round draft picks for quite a while, so anyone who would be interested in shepherding those minor leaguers into the majors over a series of several years will have something to work with soon.
Kansas City Royals: Most of the team's young talent is in AAA, so they might be position to make a move in the AL South. With a couple strong free agents or trades, they might be ready to compete now. But it will take some finesse.
Washington Nationals: The toughest managerial challenge available right now. Their big issue is that most of their best guys in the minors are relievers. Their major league team has gaps everywhere, and it's unclear exactly how they can be filled in the near future. On the plus side that have barely any money committed in their payroll. Lots of flexibility there.

One last nudge, before we really start into the off-season and plan for next year... The 5/50 Rule and Contract Stipulations I propose immediately below in BOLD (only to highlight it) will replace the text further down regarding Zevin currently in the rules ( even though he no longer oversees contracts). The key points, in my humble and as unbiased as possible opinion: - The Zevin language as it stands now requires a player to have 2 arbitration hearings plus 4 years+ or 5 years+ of ML service (which, in absence of Zevin is conflicted and confusing).
- I propose we "simply" do one-year contracts (in the off-season pre-arb window) or arbitration through 5years/50days...period. Simple and fully values a player!
- My research shows (happy to add another table ) contracts for quality players escalate within their term. Fact!
- I propose we "simply" stipulate that.
- Escalation, however, is a know exploit if you allow it unchecked (especially option years) and some "percentages" do not "scale" as good as others. This might be the biggest buy-in from my fellow GM's, but...
- I propose we "simply" cap escalation at 25% over the term.
- The stipulation about using only one kind of "option" or the "opt-out" is merely to keep things from being too creative and is easier to follow than a bunch of language about how you should not be allowed a player option following a team option (another exploit). "Simplicity!"
- The 25% team option buyout amount again just simplifies what the PBL rules say now and is pretty standard stuff. No big deal I would think!
- And seriously (OK, tongue-in-cheek, but seriously)...Shane structures a great many of his contracts in roughly this way and WINS (consistently) to let's all BE LIKE SHANE!
So...5/50 (minus any of my previous explanation, attempted justification and the "vesting" language - which again is pretty standard stuff): Players under team control may not be signed to a multi-year contract until they have reached a minimum of 5 YEARS & 50 DAYS of major league service time.
They may be offered arbitration in each of their arbitration years OR a one year contract may be negotiated for the next season (but only between the start of the off-season and the arbitration date).
Once a player reaches 5/50, the contract stipulations below must be observed.Free agent contracts may be negotiated at any time between the free agency filing date and the end of the regular season. The contract stipulations below must also be observed. All contracts must adhere to the following stipulations:1. Annual contract amounts, guaranteed or option, may not be lower than the first year. 2. Annual contract amounts, guaranteed or option, may only be 25% higher than the first. 3. Only one “type” of option, or the new Opt-Out, may be offered in any contract (Team, Player, Vesting or Opt-Out). 4. All team option years offered must include a 25% buyout.
Replaces all of this current Zevin language... Contract Extensions
The PBL has a unique mechanism with which to conduct contract extensions. The league employs a “Player Agent” named Isaac Zevin. Zevin’s role is to maintain contract integrity and to make sure all extension offers are deemed acceptable and to protect the in-game AI from being taken advantage of by any GM.
a. The role of Isaac Zevin will be played by the Commissioner. b. A GM can gauge a player’s willingness to extend in the usual manner in-game BUT the actual extension offer will occur outside the game and will be submitted in a forum PM to Isaac Zevin. c. If the player is not willing to extend in-game and instead wishes to test free agency, then obviously no extension can happen. d. If the player is receptive to an extension in-game then the GM can use the player’s in-game expectation to build an offer. e. The offer will be submitted to Zevin and Zevin will either: i. Accept the offer. ii. Counter the offer until the GM agrees or decides to pass on the extension. f. Once the GM and Player Agent Zevin agree to an extension i. The extension will be entered by the GM in-game and submitted with the next export ii. The Commissioner will obviously confirm the extension before the next SIM. g. The GM is then asked to report the Contract Extension with a post in the forum thread so all of the other GM’s are aware. h. If you pass an extension in game without the consent of Zevin then you are subject to a $5m fine added to your player expense for current year and a loss of your 1st round pick. Second offense, you will be considered for dismissal from the PBL.
Contract Extensions Eligibility
Any player that has 2 arbitration hearings completed prior to free-agency along with 4 years+ or 5 years+ of ML service (Arbitration results must be displayed on the BNN player page for all to see) is eligible for PBL contract extensions. Any player with one or less Arbitration hearings is not eligible for a contract extension.
There are many factors that go into deciding how much per season the player will be paid, how many years the extension will cover and what the final AAV each eligible player will sign for. This will be negotiated with the GM of the team.
A method will be followed by Zevin and the stable of high-quality BHSC agents to determine market value and will include all/some of the following factors below. This method will be known as the Player Comp.
Player Comp
a. Review pitchers/hitters in the PBL to compare them using all/some of the following parameters:
1. Player Statistics including the previous season and their career. 2. Player Ratings. 3. Player Salaries (this will include previous Arbitration salaries awarded, previous Extension Salaries negotiated and Free Agent contracts negotiated. 4. Player age and years of service will be factored into the extension decision, and will not be limited to the player age/experience comparables only. 5. Personality ratings (Greed, loyalty, desire to play for a winner) of each individual player can also factor into the contract extension decision.
b. 10 year contracts will be considered for elite talent only. However, each case will be individually reviewed per player. The use of OSA 'top player' list of 20 hitters and 20 pitchers will help guide decisions on who could/should/might receive a 10 year contract.
c. Consideration will be given for front-load/back-load contracts; however, franchise needs/tenure of GM may play a part in this decision as well. Each case will be examined individually by Zevin's office.
d. Any contract extension that has a yearly value over $10M, the following front-load/back-load rules will apply:
i. No yearly value (In any year of the negotiation) can be more than double any other yearly value throughout the lifetime of the contract.
Free Agent Signings
Once the free agency window opens then players can be signed in the usual way in-game. a. Free agent compensation is turned on – Please note that signing “COMP ELLIGIBLE” players will result in the loss of a draft pick.
Incentive Clauses
GM’s may offer incentive clauses in contracts, as noted in-game, for players reaching specific milestones (at-bats, innings pitched) and also for MVP and Cy Young awards, etc.
a. The TOTAL value of ALL incentives must not exceed 25% of the lowest annual contract offered to the player. b. Example 1 – If a player is offered a one-year $1,000,000 dollar contract then incentives cannot total more than $250,000 c. Example 2 – If a player is offered a three-year contract of $8,000,000, $9,000,000 and $10,000,000 dollars then the incentives cannot total more than $2,000,000 (25% of the lowest annual contract value) d. For both incentives and vesting options, the following rules also apply: i. No vesting option can be triggered based on the number of At-Bats of a pitcher ii. Amount of At-Bats must be 550 or less iii. Innings pitched for Pitchers with Endurance greater than or equal to 5 must be 180 Innings Pitched or lower iv. Innings pitched for Pitchers with Endurance less than 5 must be 80 Innings Pitched or lower v. No Cy Young Award bonuses for Pitchers with Endurance less than 5 vi. No deliberately unachievable incentive clauses such at-bats for a pitcher
Team Option Years
Contracts may include team options as set out in-game
a. Any team option year, for a contract of 3 guaranteed years or less, must have a buyout equal to at least 25% of the highest year of the contract, whether that year is an option or guaranteed year. b. Any team option year, for a contract of 4 guaranteed years or more, must have a buyout equal to at least 50% of the highest year of the contract, whether that year is an option or guaranteed year.

again... why can't i front load a contract? I dont get this. Jhonny Peralta is a perfect example of why front loading should be allowed. I'll quote both to answer once. Clearly you both disagree with my position, which is fine. Happy to explain it again in this thread. Contracts in MLB generally escalate within their term! Young, elite player contracts, certainly through their prime years and well beyond. To account for every nuance when negotiating a contract is impossible, so I went with simple and used the one-year or arb to emulate getting player contract values up in OOTP during that period, because the game still struggles with it when you sign multi-year extensions during minimum and arb years. Here's an updated version of my table showing that (including both Longoria and Rizzo, cited elsewhere as being signed young). Is this every permutation? Of course not. But I do feel it's a good cross-section to show that contracts escalate. Now...With respect to Peralta (and of course there are always exceptions)... His contract escalated moderately until his current deal (which furthers my point above). His current four-year contract, signed at age 32, features two years of the same (highest) value, followed by two de-escalating years. So out of a 13-year career, the last two, at age 34 & 35 - if he makes it that far - are the only ones that fall outside my proposal. I still think that proves it's a pretty decent suggestion in general. Peralta, at age 34 now, aside, my proposal is to protect young stud players from being gamed with an unrealistic, front-loaded, deal. I kept it as simple and hopefully universally applicable as possible, again to protect elite talent. Personally, as I suggested in the other thread, I would argue you not do a Peralta-esque deal in PBL with a 32-year old whose talents may diminish over a four-year term, but instead go with a shorter term within the stipulations outlined in my proposal. That may actually save you from paying him when he's done, but still under contract? Hope that answers you concern and better explain my position?

If the young player gets the same amount of money in either a front-loaded or back-loaded scenario, how is the player being taken advantage of?

Im really tired of this. You said ALL contracts so that applies to free agency as well. I dont understand if I have the money now (which i dont) why I can't spend it NOW.
Im not sure how we dont even have a vote or anything regarding this rules and how youre just putting them into place.
