Just skipping picks is even worse, because it means that less active teams suffer, making them unfillable in the long run when the GM leaves (which is more likely if his pick is passed over). We would just be massively rushing things for no benefit. In the league I was in not one GM quit because they missed their pick. GM's are big boys. This is how I would structure it: I would use 6 hour increments. Times are the deadline not the beginning of a time slot. Once the person in front of you selects, your are free to pick a player. This means the draft can still proceed quickly at times. Once the GM goes over his deadline the person after is free to select. Once he selects, the next person may pick and so on. The passed over player may jump in at any time and select an available player. If he drops a few spots, it usually is a powerful inducement to pay attention next time- not quit. And to be honest, if someone quits because of this, assuming there is proper notice, do we really care? This would mean we can not forget to set up the draft. And it's also quite likely that people will have to pay attention because the deadlines will be rescheduled (I'm guessing around the 3 day mark) because the draft moves faster than the slots and we don't want to have a couple days of dead time. Now Rob, you ask what we gain? The draft doesn't really need a real time monitor. No autos, just someone to fill in the order at the end of the night. Remember Sam is going to reform and get married. And in the end, what we choose to do doesn't have to be forever. If we don't like it we can try something different next year.

Autos are much better for the league than teams slipping down the draft, especially as the teams affected are likely to be the problem franchises that we struggle to fill/keep GMs for. If we were failing to finish one round, or teams were somehow being auto'd because we had a rush of picks and they hadn't noticed - then there would be a problem that needed looking at. This system - at absolute best - gives us something no worse than now, but not better. At worst, it is definitely worse. This does, of course, assume someone can fill Sam's shoes. I would be happy to do so, but as SBL shows, I can only do that during UK time. If someone could cover the US evening time then we are fine.

I can only say that I have been in a league that did it this way, and we lost no GMs because of this. I don't think I ever saw anybody drop more than 5 spots, and nobody in the top 10 ever missed. There were times when someone dropped out, and the commish would jump in to auto eventually. But let's be honest, players don't usually ditch at the beginning of the season.

And also, if one pick is going to doom a team to the slums, we might want to rethink draft pick trading.
