The A's are very excited to sign first baseman, Elvis Daniels.
The deal is a 4-year, $6.8m contract. First three years are worth $1.3m, $1.65m, $1.9m respectively and a 4th year team option at $2m.
Daniels is going to get the chance to compete for the starting DH role but if not he is happy with a reserve role which gives us great depth at 1B going into the year. A 7-contact, 8 in eye and discipline with 6 in power and gap. I can really see Daniels if he gets enough at-bats reverting to the hitter he was from 2021-2022 where he was a 15 homer, 70 RBI guy with a slash line around .280/.375/.425.

Braves signed hard throwing 23 year old RH Reliever Shou-Chien Chiu (10-6-5) to a low-risk $880k 1 year deal. With the Braves bullpen struggles, he will have every opportunity to make the team out of Spring Traning. The plus side of Chiu is he still has a minor league option available if he struggles in Spring Training with his control he will be able to work out the control issues in Gwinett. (9 walks in 9 IP in 2023 for Arizona.)
Was selected to the 2023 Pacific Coast League All-Star Game.

Toronto moves on bargain bin players----Bernard Baptiste St. Pierre-LaCroix, Toronto Star
The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with two under the radar free agents.
Right hander Patrick Parker will join the bullpen for Toronto at a sum of 2.4 million over 2 years, with the second year a vesting option dependent upon Parker doing what he has done for the past six seasons---pitch well in hitter's parks and do so without getting injured. He essentially throws one pitch---a sinker---but he throws it well, and if he can give a little support to a 'pen that was basically Tomas Ramirez, Brian Sinclair and hold on for dear life at the end of last season, then this will make for a good signing.
OF Kenny Brooks leaves the Rays to join Toronto on a two year deal at under a million per. Brooks has long been regarded as among the, if not the best defensive outfielders in the league. He struggled to hit enough to crack the lineup in San Francisco, but has found his stroke the last two seasons with Tampa. The hope is that he can continue to hit at a league average rate and provide some help in the outfield for the Blue Jays.
Neither signing is a huge one, but they are a sign that the club is confident about its developmental program and does not feel the need to spend large in free agency this offseason.

Just three very minor ones for the Yankees, with some superb top end stars on the roster, but not really more available as FAs, the Yankees focussed on picking up some infield depth.
First in was elite defensive middle infielder Jose Iglesias who signed a one-year, 900k deal to play in a defensive substitute role rather than see much game time, although may platoon and start against lefties. Iglesias had a brief spell at the San Francisco Giants under Rob Nichols before being traded away, but obviously showed enough for Nichols to come back in for him.
The second acquisition for the Yankees is also no stranger to Rob Nichols having recently released him from a mega contract with the Giants. Andrus primarily offers legendary speed, and is the all-time stolen base leader with 736 and counting. Jose Reyes achieved 691, but the next nearest active player is Marvin Webb with 375, nearly half Andrus' number. Andrus also offers top defence at shortstop, something Nichols is known to value. Andrus will compete for the every day shortstop position with Drew Cumberland, another of Nichols' former charges. With two guaranteed years and a team option for the third, Andrus should get every chance to make his stolen base tally unassailable for a very long time.
The most recent piece in for the Yankees is third baseman Jon Davis. Davis had mostly been playing first base in the Red Sox minor league system last year, and this was thought to have affected his value to other teams. In his natural third base position, he predicts to be a useful back-up, but may well spend more time in AAA than the majors. Another top defender with a real stealing threat, Nichols is clearly targeting depth that fits in to his style to round out the Yankees roster. At 1 million, Davis may be an expensive AAA depth piece, but it is a very low risk move that could pay off.
I'm very happy with these pieces, all extremely low risk but cheap depth that allows me to move away some of the younger talent that wasn't seeing enough game time for areas of need. Top speed and defence in my back-ups is hugely important to me, if the bat isn't good enough to start then the defence has to be there instead.

We're happy to have picked up 2 guys in FA that fill needs. Nick Weglarz will likely be our starter at 1B this year. Angelo Perez has not developed at the pace we expected despite a stint in the minors, so he will get some bench time behind Weglarz. We expect OBP at 1st to improve by at least 30 points, and hopefully more.
SS Martin Williams was picked up to fill a utility infield role. Though he has no ML experience, he seems ready. Perhaps he will compete with Ocascio at 3rd.

Not much going on in Arizona this off-season after the trade for Stanton has pushed the budget to he limit until next season, when 25M in contracts will come off the books. So far, we have picked up 1 player in free agency, 33-year old 3B David Renfroe was signed for 700K. Renfroe has good power, but was signed just as much for his fantastic glove at third base.
One of the goals for Arizona has been to improve what has been one of the worst fielding teams in the NL, while still maintaining a solid offense. Stanton in RF, Lopez in CF, and a new catcher behind the plate while Preston Martin transitions to DHing part time, should really improve the defense, and if Renfroe wins the 3B job, he will add to it even more. Like our catching situation and the last 2 bullpen spots, our starting third basemen will likely be decided in spring training, with 5 players getting a look there (Veterans Renfroe and Woody Barnett, along with prospects Thomas Henry, Jose Galvan, and Enrique Castillo). With that depth, hopefully someone will step forward as a dependable contributor.
Haven't loaded the new file yet, so there may be a couple of cheap pitchers signed who will compete for the last two bullpen spots with Manny Acevedo, Joe Lang, and John Phillips.

Busier off season than anticipated for the Tigers. Complete surprise that 1B Luis Palacios signed. He originally wanted a 7 year 90 mil contract or something insane like that so I just threw a number out there 5 for 66 mil and he took it. It wasn't my plan to sign another high priced free agent, but, now I have added to what I think is going to be a very potent offensive and stellar defensive team. I also added C Keith Norwood who should fill in fine every 5th or 6th day as long as he can play defense.
Pitching is still suspect. I think last season's team pitched better than they really are. Terry Ball and Lucas Johnston were pleasant surprises last season so hopefully they continue to develop. I am really disappointed Juan Gonzales. He didn't pan out as the number 1 I anticipated. I definitely was not going after an old high priced pitcher so I brought in a couple relievers in Denny Miller and Horace cooper whom I think will sure up the bullpen.

Daniels also has a buyout option higher than his actual salary for that year! Now that's one way to make sure you don't break any buyout rules!

$500,000 was the minimum, I suspect he asked for $2.5mil, I have seen some extortionate demands like that so I guess you didn't lower it during one round of negotiations.

SP/RP Lee Wilson - 650,000 / 1 year The 29 year old lefty will battle for the 5th spot/long relief role for the Braves. Spending the last several seasons in the Mets minor league system, he provides depth should he not make the Major League roster out of spring training since he has all 3 options available.
SS Yunier Castillo - 1,000,000 / 1 year The former Brave returns for his second stint with the team. After spending the last 2 injury filled seasons with Milwaukee he returns to hotlanta. Strong defensively, he allows Zere Thabet to slide back into the Utility role that fits him best. He will battle John Vangilder for the starting SS role but will most likely spend some time on the DL.
C Xavier Lopez - 1,750,000 / 1 year Xavier will create a 3 way battle for the starting Catcher role. Very strong defensively with a cannon for an arm. Has struggled in the majors since the 2019 campaign with Baltimore but will at least fill the backup role at worse as the catching position is kept warm for top prospect Caleb Quibell

We signed 2B Logan Watkins to a 2 year deal at $2M per year. Our SP ERA went through the roof last year after being one of the lower ones in the PBL the year before. Mound lowered should have helped us so that leaves the defense which was much weaker at 2B and 3B. So, Juan Rivera slides to 3B and Watkins into 2B. Peter Shultz is the odd man out so he'll have to be a bench player. His stats don't merit more at this point in time, anyway.
So, Watkins brings the D and has an OBP of 40% and 36% over the past 2 years so he may help set the table for the middle of the order. At some point, maybe this year, I want to slot Ruiz into #3 spot.

Oakland signed 3B- Aurelio Flores to a 1-year, $950,000.
Flores is somewhat of a leader and will compete for the utility infield role as he is great defensively at all 4 infield spots and also great in range, arm strength, ability to turn double plays and will not commit many errors. Offensively he is okay, possesses good gap power and has a good eye.
Small signing but provides some depth.
