[shadow=red,left,300]Seattle Mariners (12-8) @ Chicago White Sox (10-10)[/shadow]
SEA: Mat Latos (2-2, 5.57 ERA) CHW: Felipe Paulino (1-1, 3.63 ERA)
Despite winning the AL Central two years in a row, the White Sox haven't been a dominant team during that span, winning only 91 games two years ago, and squeaking into the playoffs with 85 wins last season.
Chicago revamped its pitching staff to find more stable success, adding Alfredo Aceves, Felipe Paulino, and Marc Rzepczynski on top of last season's Rich Harden acquisition.
However, Harden and Rzepczynski joined young ace Pedro Hernandez on the DL and each will miss significant time with injuries this season. With the trio out, the White Sox have plummeted to eleventh in AL ERA.
The troubling thing about the pitching is that it holds back a vigorous offensive attack. Each of the White Sox top three hitters is hitting well over .300, and five of the top six batters in the order have double-digit RBI's. Superstar Gian Guzman is second in the league in OPS, while young shortstop Eiichi Maeda is second in the league in average With such a potent attack, it's no shock that Chicago leads the AL in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, average, and is second in runs scored.
This is the attack the Mariners will try to slow down. They were blitzed for 11 runs during the opener of the series, though Felix Hernandez stymied them during a complete game shutout yesterday.
Mat Latos is no Felix Hernandez though, with an ERA over five and a WHIP near two to start the season. Most of the White Sox have limited at bats versus Latos, but Brock Kjeldgaard his 3-8 with a long ball in his career off Latos.
Seattle's offense is the only one in the league to have scored more runs than Chicago's. While star catcher Bryan Anderson is off to a slow start, hitting .217, Seattle has gotten run production throughout the order, even down to the bottom of the order where Matt Lawson is hitting .295 and Ivan DeJesus Jr. has 14 RBI's.
The lineup will try and tee off on converted reliever Felipe Paulino, who has done a nice job filling the holes in the White Sox rotation, with a respectable 3.63 ERA.
Brent Keys hit an AL lead-tying sixth home run yesterday and has home runs in each of the two games in the series. How Paulino handles him may be the key to who wins and loses.
Questions for the GM's.
For Sam East, you've opened up more playing time for youngster Brent Keys and he's responded in a huge way. What do you like out of him?
Mat Latos will be playing a juggernaut of an offense. How can we expect him to attack the Chicago lineup?
Your relievers have been horrendous in the early part of 2015. Do you stretch out Latos a bit longer than expected today?
For Jason Wilson, your rotations has been besieged by serious injuries, though Felipe Paulino has stepped in and done a credible job. Is he going to start even when the injured players get healthy, or will he be shuttled to the pen?
Seattle's offense has a lot of good hitters even down to the bottom of the order. What challenge does that present your staff?
Finally, Brock Kjeldgaard has only five extra base hits to start the year, but he's made them count for 16 RBI's. What do you expect out of him in this game?
It should be an offensive slugfest in this edition of PBL Game of the Week!

For Jason Wilson, your rotations has been besieged by serious injuries, though Felipe Paulino has stepped in and done a credible job. Is he going to start even when the injured players get healthy, or will he be shuttled to the pen?Felipe Paulino was targeted as a starting pitcher by the White Sox scouts. They looked at some of the success he had in the past at starting games and think if he can get 6 quality innings per start, that would be enough for the starting lineup to score enough runs and win a good number of games. Paulino wont go 9 innings for you - but if he can get into the 6th inning - that would be tremendous at this point. Seattle's offense has a lot of good hitters even down to the bottom of the order. What challenge does that present your staff? When the Mariners get men on base - they figure out how to get them home - so the biggest challenge will be keeping them off base. The Mariners have allot of power hitters that can change a game really fast - very similar to our team. There will be homeruns hit - we just have to limit them to solo homeruns instead of them hitting homeruns with men on base - that will be the key to the game. Finally, Brock Kjeldgaard has only five extra base hits to start the year, but he's made them count for 16 RBI's. What do you expect out of him in this game?If we can get men on base - we expect Brock to get them home - he is hitting .370, 2 HR, and 15 of his 16 RBI with men in scoring position. The "BK Broiler" has killed it with men on base.

My opinion on what Brent can do for the club has changed a lot over the past year. When we signed him it was with a view to using him in a lead off role, he's a high contact guy, with some speed around the bases and he's very solid defensively. I wasn't expecting him to add power to his game too, but I've got to give Brent credit for how much he's developed that part of his game. He's in the weights room every spare minute of the day, and that kid isnt ever going to be out-worked by anyone. With Marc (Krauss), Bryan (Anderson) and Brett (Wallace) the big left handed bats in the team, Brent probably going to find himself batting a little lower than his form deserves - but he's our every-day right field and will likely bat at #6 from here on in.
Mat Latos will be playing a juggernaut of an offense. How can we expect him to attack the Chicago lineup?
He just needs to copy what Felix did yesterday! (Hernandez threw a 5 hit shut out on Sunday). Seriously though, although Mat's going to have to pitch carefully to some of these guys - he's a strike out pitcher and that what he'll be concentrating on doing tonight.
Your relievers have been horrendous in the early part of 2015. Do you stretch out Latos a bit longer than expected today?
It's been a difficult start to the season for our bullpen - with the exception of Soria they've all struggled. Mat will have his job to do, but he can't do other's jobs for them too. This is a new bullpen, put together this off season, and so it's to be expected that it might take a while for them to settle in. But we're nearly a month into the season now and if these guys can't perform at the level we need them to then they're not going to be in the Mariner's bullpen for much longer.

We're missing Braun with a 'diagnosis pending' injury... considering he's just signed a $72m contract extention - im expecting the diagnosis to be a career ending stubbed toe or something similar

He'll probably be out 13 months and suffer a huge ratings drop, but will be back in your lineup for the vast majority of that contract.

I love the nickname "The BK Broiler!" Officially added to the game. ChiSox your pretty new around here but this is officially the 3rd PBL generated nickname added to the league file: 1) Todd "Rocky Mountain God" Helton 2) Marvin "The Memib" Webb (short for Most Exciting Man in Baseball) 3) Brock "BK Broiler" Kjeldgaard

Unfortunately, Beau "General" Mills never caught on... (I might've pushed for it a little harder if he wasn't a one season wonder/ruin his development with a position change) . For the record, Latos is an extremely consistent pitcher (while maybe not top tier) and his slow start to the season only signals better starts to come. There's good reason why Sam and I danced for two years trying to move him to Seattle. I'll take the odds on the M's in this one.

yeh I still like Latos a lot, he's very cheap, his ratings hold up, he hasnt been injured and I can count on him to finish with a sub 4.00 era (which with my offense should be enough to win more than he loses). he might not quite be good enough to be #2 but he's a very good #3.

Postgame Wrap:
Mariners 13 - White Sox 4
Mat Latos tweaked his oblique on the mound. Brett Wallace was tossed for arguing balls and strikes. The Mariners who got to stick around had a free and easy day at the office.
Seattle pummeled the White Sox for 15 hits and 13 walks in a nine-run laugher. Matt Lawson and Russ Canzler had back-to-back two-run singles in the fifth inning to give the Mariners a lead they wouldn't surrender. They scored in each subsequent inning to pad their lead.
Russ Canzler, who has been suffering through a dreadful start, had three RBI's, Michael Bourn had three runs scored and three hits, while Brandon Allen smacked three hits and his third home run of the year. All told, the AL's deepest lineup lived the part against a White Sox team struggling to pitch.
Felipe Paulino allowed seven runs in 5 innings, allowing nine hits and four walks in the process. The White Sox bullpen was dreadful, allowing six runs in four innings, while the defense committed four errors. The White Sox looked second rate in a game against part of the upper echelon of the PBL hierarchy.
To add insult to injury, Gian Guzman's streak of 15 games without striking out ended when Tim Melville fanned him in the seventh. It was only Guzman's third whiff all year.
Eric Surkamp came out of the pen to work 1.2 scoreless innings after Latos' oblique tweak to earned the win. Seattle's pen worked 4.2 innings, allowing just a hit and a walk, a stark contrast to Chicago's. The injury to Latos doesn't appear to be serious and he believes he'll be able to make his next start.
Questions for the GM's. For Sam East, your pen has been much maligned, but the unit did a nice job against a good Chicago offense. Why did they pitch so well?
Michael Bourn was a very low-key addition for your team this offseason but he had three hits and scored three times to fuel your attack. What did you like out of his at bats?
Russ Canzler had been really scuffling. What was going through your mind when he came up in the fifth with two runners on and the score 4-3?
For Jason Wilson, putrid performance from your fielders. Will this be addressed in the coming weeks?
Felipe Paulino got rocked and that's three straight weeks of allowing at least nine hits in 6 innings of work or less. Does he have the makeup of a starting pitcher?
What would you say was the one pitch made in the game you wish your team had back?

Will this be addressed in the coming weeks? All we can do is conitnue to address it in practice - the team that is on the field isnt going to change this year - unfortunately - our corner infielders arent as strong as the middle of the field - but it is what it is.Felipe Paulino got rocked and that's three straight weeks of allowing at least nine hits in 6 innings of work or less. Does he have the makeup of a starting pitcher?Well - right now - that is what I need from him - so I'm going to stick by him and say I think he can get it done for us this year with all the other issues we are dealing with in the starting rotation. If I had other options - I might real him back a bit - but that isnt an option right now. What would you say was the one pitch made in the game you wish your team had back?I would say there was an AB that I wish I could have back - top of the 5th - the walk to Marc Krauss realy hurt us with 2 outs in the inning already. Seattle ended up scoring 4 runners that inning after the White Sox took the lead in the previous inning.
