[shadow=red,left,300] San Francisco Giants (0-0) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (0-0)[/shadow]
SF: Tim Lincecum (17-9, 2.51 ERA)
LAD: Martin Perez 17-7, 3.28)
* Stats are from 2014.
Los Angeles kicks off its National League Championship defense with a fierce contest against their rival, the San Francisco Giants.
The Dodgers made precious few moves this offseason in their quest to make it to their third World Series in four seasons. Instead, they'll rely on a familiar face as Martin Perez takes the hill fresh off his outstanding 2014 campaign.
Their offense will have to contend with superstar Tim Lincecum, who should again be as unhittable as usual.
Lincecum has a habit of making opposing hitters look overmatched---as is the case with Los Angeles. The Dodgers middle-of-the-order hitters, Luis Ramon Arzeno, Blake Smith, and Rebel Ridling are a combined 7-48 off the star righty. The Dodgers will have to beat him with lesser players, which is nearly impossible, or hope their stars buck the trend, which is unlikely.
The Giants will likely throw a nearly-completely right handed lineup at Perez, though rumor has it star slugger Marinus Vernooij will defer to Gaby Sanchez. Sanchez is hitting .333 off Perez, while Vernooij has no at bats against him. Though it's shocking Vernooij may not get the start, Sanchez has terrific numbers.
With Lincecum no longer flanked by outstanding pitching teammates on the Giants, this is a crucial start for the Giants to jump out to an early division lead. For the Dodgers, this series is a good way to make an NL West statement. It's a good old-fashioned NL West grudge match to kick off 2015!
Questions for the GM's.
For Tomas Bekker, you didn't do much to your roster this offseason. What was the reasoning behind maintaining the status quo?
Your core hitters have done terribly against Big Time Timmy-Jim. What is your approach against him today?
Austin Gallagher has big time power, but such a reckless approach at the plate. Do you start a more sound Brian Bocock in his place today or hope he gets lucky and drives one out?
For Robert Nichols, is Tim Lincecum the best pitcher in baseball?
Does Marinus Vernooij, your best slugger, get the start against Perez?
You have a lot of good line-drive hitters on your team, perhaps the most you've ever had. Which one of them is the key to beating the Dodgers today?
