Gotta say I'm surprised Mauer is winning since he only played 120 games. Figured one of Fielder/Webb would run away with it.

I'm not surprised. In that 120 games he was better than Webb/Fielder was in a full season. Similar situation to Josh Hamilton for the Rangers in 2010.

Personally, I think Mauer deserves the Hank Aaron Award more than the MVP. We all have our own personal qualifications for MVP, and I think that staying durable and being in the lineup every day is one thing an MVP should do, UNLESS his numbers are overwhelmingly better than other candidates (in Hamilton's case last year).

In my opinion, an MVP has both the statistics and leadership qualities that make his team great. That means that the player who was most valuable to his team in terms of wins added should take home the hardware. While I agree that durability certainly should play a role in determining the MVP, Mauer gets a bit of leeway as a catcher (they take rest days anyways...).
I think that without Mauer, the Twins are not a playoff caliber team. He's that big of an impact for them. While you cannot discount a player's MVP qualifications for his team missing the playoffs, you can certainly give them credit for placing the team on their shoulders.

If wins added are the most important category, I would think Prince would take the award, no?
After coming to Boston, the Sox went 43-18 and overcame a 9 game deficit to win the East. Not to mention his insane 1.245 OPS.
This is why award voting is so great - everyone has their own convictions about what determines an MVP.

Most might disagree with me here, but I think that's a bit of a false correlation. Boston's entire roster was overturned. Look at the opening day roster and compare it to the post-deadline Sox. It was no surprise to me that the team took on an entirely different performance level.
And I don't think that anyone would argue that without Prince, the Red Sox wouldn't have made the playoffs (well, Sam might...).
Dominant offensive force? Yes. Team lynchpin in 2012? Arguable.

Or in Wiley's case this year And in this case its not an either or for Mauer, I believe he deserves both awards.
