We hear a lot about "so and so's an average player" but what does that actually mean?
Out of curiosity, I ran some numbers, and the average middle reliever (weighted by BF) is about 8.2 stuff, 6.8 movement and 6.0 control.
In other words, a totally average MR in the PBL this year is about 8/7/6, of which there are five right now: Jesus Martinez (PHI), Rob Reynolds (CHA), Mike McCoy (CLE), Paul Crawford (BOS) and Brad Woodward (PIT).
Who is the biggest outlier? That would be Atlanta's Angel Chavez, who is 10/3/9.
What about performance?
The league average MR in the PBL so far gives up a home run in 3.53% of plate appearances, a walk in 8.89% of PA and generates a strikeout 22.3% of the time.
If you're curious what that looks like, consider Montreal's Lou Miles, a high-upside starter who's moonlighting in the bullpen right now.
Biggest outlier? That would be Atlanta's Tomas Macias, who is striking out a ton, walking a ton, but allowing very few home runs.
Anyhow, I thought this was interesting.
