Every time I look at the Miami roster I have to think about how I traded them Ulbert Doppenberg. I would feel much better about it if they gave him an absurdly large contract, please.

I’m looking forward to a completed rebuild and a spending spree any day now. I’ll be here, waiting patiently.

Arizona Diamondbacks
**** (New) Enrique Castillo (3B)
- $71.2 Mill through 2070.
- I was trying to piece together how I guy could suddenly become replacement level without any skill reduction, defensive issues or injuries. It seemed impossible! Then I saw it: The man has posted 10 or fewer homers a year for the last two seasons. He’s lost his mojo. But the Diamondbacks have got to be hoping they bought low on a 4 WAR player who’s hit a slow patch.
** (New) David Peters (RF)
- $110.4 Mill through 2071.
- $27.6 Mill player option in 2067.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- Although it’s not reasonable to call this the “downswing” of his career, it’s also clear that those crazy peaks where he lead the lead in WAR, slugging and triples are behind him. He’s still got a lot of power (and triples) to look forward to, but he’s not quite the guy he used to be.
** (New) Yang Siu (1B)
- $46.5 Mill through 2070.
- $15.5 Mill team option in 2071 with a $4 Mill buyout.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- A long time ago I traded the Yang Siu, 4 prospects who went nowhere, and my first 5 draft picks to the Brewers for a starting pitcher. That pitcher was Sarsa-Dengal Robienayai and he became one of the winningest pitchers in Rockies history. Part of me thinks the Brewer’s GM would still make that trade again, but its hard to be sure. In any event, Siu’s trade to Arizona means the Milwaukee teardown is complete.
Atlanta Braves
*** (New) Gonzalo Crespo (3B)
- $62.57 Mill through 2072.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- Crespo is a truly amazing defensive third baseman. If he has a season like last year then he’s not a terrible expense for the kind of protection he provides in the hot corner. But his injury proneness is unlikely to let that happen routinely anymore.
- $15 Mill through 2068.
- $15 Mill player option in 2069.
- I’m always flummoxed when I see a player with a high rating for speed and a low rating for outfield range. What’s the other element that outfield range requires other than speed? Unless he has Mr. Magoo level eyesight or something…
*** (No change) Keith Edgar (RF)
- $15 Mill through 2068.
- $15 Mill player option in 2069.

Carolina Warhounds
Okay. No one on the Warhounds is earning more than $3.2 million. That’s got to be illegal, right? Think of the poor, starving albatrosses!
Chicago Cubs
*** (New) Evan Mills (SP)
- $41.2 Mill through 2069.
- Player opt out after 2069.
- $39.2 Mill through 2071.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- Evans probably has the worst movement of pitchers who can still be considered upper tier. But when he gave up a league leading 37 homers last season he was definitely at the very bottom of that upper teir.
Cincinnati Reds
*** (New) Hidetsugu Fujii (RF)
- $58.74 through 2069.
- $39.16 retained by the Seattle Mariners through 2069.
- Even with the Mariners taking 40% of his contract, Cincy is taking quite a gamble keeping a guy with his injury history out on the field. Not that I’m criticizing. Have you seen their DH, Ruben Reyes? There’s no way you’re sitting that guy, or putting him anywhere else but DH. So, another roll of the dice for Fujii.
* (New) Zack Davis (2B)
- $78.6 Mill through 2070.
- $22.2 Mill team option in 2071 with a $7.05 Mill buyout.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- He got 3rd in the NL MVP voting last year, and won the MVP the year before that. Not too shabby for his early 30s. I love to see a guy peak in the latter half of his career.
Los Angeles Dodgers
** (New) Raul Ferrer (2B)
- $45.2 Mill through 2069.
- $25 Mill team option in 2070 with a $6.75 Mill buyout.
- $25 Mill team option in 2071 with a $6.75 Mill buyout.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- Maybe he’s not putting up 9 WAR anymore, but I love a contract that gives a consistent player consistent money. Is the deal a little hefty? Sure. But it would take an asteroid strike for me to be concerned about it falling through.
Miami Marlins
Every time I look at the Miami roster I have to think about how I traded them Ulbert Doppenberg. I would feel much better about it if they gave him an absurdly large contract, please.
Milwaukee Brewers
I’m looking forward to a completed rebuild and a spending spree any day now. I’ll be here, waiting patiently.
Montreal Expos
**** (+2 stars) Miguel Chaves (1B)
- $28.8 Mill through 2069.
- Player opt out after 2069.
- $28.8 Mill through 2071.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- His OPS has been declining rapidly over the past 4 years. Maybe he never was a .900 OPS guy, but he should never put up anything as replacement level as .700. He’s not paid a ton, but it’s got to be pretty disappointing.
*** (New) Lucio Rivera (CF)
- $38 Mill through 2069.
- Player opt out after 2069.
- $40 Mill through 2071.
- Promised role: Starting pitcher.
- He’s like Kenzaburo Sato with a better glove and a weaker bat. This means that much like Sato, he needs exceptional defense every year in order to justify his value. Even a slightly above average year like 2067 makes him feel exceedingly overpaid. On the plus side, I don’t buy it as anything more than an outlier.
New York Mets
I award you no Albatrosses and may God have mercy on your soul. I think I've made this reference before. Oh well.
Philadelphia Phillies
*** (New) Bill McBryde (3B)
- $39 Mill through 2070.
- Player opt out after 2070.
- $97 Mill through 2074.
- $25 Mill Player option in 2075.
- $22.5 Mill team option in 2076 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- I’m willing to give McBryde the benefit of the doubt. He’s certainly put up quite a bit of value at 3rd. But I don’t believe he’s ever going to develop into the superstar he was projected to be and this contract is SO huge and SO devastatingly long.
Pittsburgh Pirates
** (New) Manny Rivera (1B)
- $30 Mill through 2068.
- $24 Mill player option in 2069.
- My least favorite reminder of mortality (in this game) is watching a superstar middle infielder slowly devolve from a Shortstop to a 2nd Baseman to a 1st Baseman as their ability to field starts to decay. Like I needed more reminders of my inevitable decay, Out of the Park!
* (New) John Simpson (3B)
- $70 Mill through 2071.
- $15 Mill team option in 2072 with a $4.5 Mill buyout.
- No arguments here. You lead the league in batting average 3 times in 5 years and you get one albatross star, absolute max.
San Diego Padres
*** (New) Yusuke Tanaka (RF)
- $66 Mill through 2070.
- $1 Mill MVP award bonus.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- Tampa traded Tanaka for little more than salary relief, but is it crazy to say they may have gotten the better end of the deal? He’s certainly not washed, but he’s definitely getting more than I feel comfortable giving a platoon outfielder.
San Francisco Giants
** (New) Jo Sato (SP)
- $48 Mill through 2070.
- Player opt out after 2070.
- $34 Mill through 2072.
- $14 Mill player option in 2073.
- This is a pretty solid deal, his wonky changeup notwithstanding. So solid, that I have a hard time imagining him not opting out.
** (New) Rafael Perez (1B)
- $102.5 Mill through 2071.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- He had a really weird year in 2066. Ironically, his career worst batting year was his career best fielding year. But whatever. I think this guy has quite a fee 5 WAR seasons in him and I will not be proven wrong by fate! I DEFY FATE.
St Louis Cardinals
*** (New) Armando Gomez (C)
- $52 Mill through 2071.
- $13.4 Mill vesting option in 2073 after 100 games.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- I think the Cardinals are paying a little bit of a premium for his personality, because his bat is pretty standard. The days of finding a really special catcher in free agency haven’t returned quite yet.
Washington Nationals
* (New) Aureliano Cervantes (SS)
- $27 Mill through 2068.
- $27 Mill player option in 2069.
- $1 MVP award bonus.
- Promised role: Starting lineup.
- He’s still the man, but I’m wondering if the Nats are going to gamble with one more extension into his 40s. I dare ya, you World Series winners, you!
* (New) Dan Galleghe (SP)
- $60 Mill through 2070.
- $20 Mill team option in 2071 with $5 Mill buyout.
- $1 Cy Young award bonus.
- Promised role: Starting pitcher.
- Of course he needs a big contract. He can’t even afford an R in his last name! GOODNIGHT EVERYBODY!
