Hope Springs Eternal! It is human nature always to find fresh cause for optimism.
That sentiment is traditionally embraced by most major league teams at the start of a new season. That said, the aura surrounding the 2067 version of the San Diego Padres is definitely one of doom and gloom.
The fan support dropped significantly over the course of the off season when fan favorite and top HR producer (34 in 2066), RF John Howe, along with DH Kata Okada went to Free Agency. Owner Hal Moores is angry due to the team’s poor performance last season and refused to provide any funds to acquire free agents or to extend existing contracts. This despite the fact that the Padres had enough injured players off during the season to staff a complete ward at Sharp Memorial Hospital.
The next few seasons will definitely test the patience of the Padres fan base as the team’s scouting and developmental budgets were cut by 17 million and 19 million respectively.
So, as the team boards their plane for the short flight north to face the Dodgers, the following roster was revealed:
Starters
RHP Roberto Campos
LHP Jo Sato
LHP Halewijn Cleaver
RHP Lee Nard
RHP Jorge Acevedo
Bullpen
Long Relief RHP Steve Everhart
Long Relief LHP Huub Boersma
Middle Relief RHP Masaru Watanabe
Middle Relief RHP Dan Miller
Middle Relief LHP Francisco Castellanos
Setup RHP Travis Chacon
Setup LHP Brian Jordan
Closer RHP Vernon Lowson
Starting Lineup
1. CF Conan Davis
2. LF Luis Villa
3. RF Yusuke Tanaka
4. DH Donald Alston
5. 1B Roberto Snyder
6. C Burt Glasson
7. 2B Pete Hale
8. 3B Lorenzo Sanchez
9. SS Tyler Hall
Bench
1. C Vicente Juarez
2. SS Curt Brewer
3. LF Luis Villa
4. 3B Anadhrishya Venktesh
Injured Roster
RP Raul Abiles – arthritic elbow – 3 months
2B Jud Bishop – Back tightness
Currently, the Padres farm system is ranked 21st overall with SP Henry Spence (19th) and RP Ben Simms (87th). GM Harold Cornish and his staff are conducting a thorough evaluation of the resources and needs of the team in preparation for the next amateur draft. With the 2nd pick overall, and 4 picks in the first 3 rounds, the brain team will do its’ best to improve their ranking and set the franchise up for future success.
Will they succeed in the draft?
Will the team manage to break the .500 threshold set by the owner?
Will the fans continue to support the team as the rebuild begins?
Time will tell!
