1. What goals did you have for this off season? Did you accomplish them?
Our goal was to upgrade our pitching staff, improve outfield defense, and add speed to the top of the order.
Given that there was minimal talent in our minor league organization, we primarily spent money on free agents. We acquired CF Roberto Trujillo for his fielding, on base, stolen base, and base running skills to lead off for us. Free swinging, high contact OF Juan Gutierrez, who also is an excellent fielder, will start in LF. RP Robert Vazquez and RP Hsin Guo will add quality depth in the bullpen. We also engineered one trade for SP Shane Foster, who should strengthen our rotation.
We accomplished our goal. Whether the changes are enough to improve run differential enough to make the playoffs is another question.
2. What would your team's most cynical and optimistic fans say about the upcoming season?
The cynical fan will acknowledge the significant changes and conclude that the team will continue to fail to meet expectations and finish 3rd in the division. Pitchers will continue to surrender runs to blow leads and batters will continue to fail to deliver clutch hits in key situations.
The optimistic fan will pin his or her hopes on the improved defense and depth. Talented young C Manny Ortiz will guide the pitching staff, fielders will use their skills to rob opposing batters of potential hits to snuff out rallies, and batters will generate enough runs in timely circumstances to finish a strong 2nd in the division and secure a playoff berth.
3. How good are your odds for winning your division? If you don't, what team is most likely to?
The odds probably are 20% or less. The Padres will win ... again.
4. Which player in your organization has the best chance of eventually being voted into the Hall of Fame?
SP Enrique Vazquez, now 40 years old, is near the end of his outstanding pitching career. Retirement is imminent. We signed him to a low cost extension in hopes that he could reach 250 career wins, but his once dominant, explosive stuff is no more. His rate stats have suffered in recent years, but he remains the best pitcher in PBL Giants history not named Tim Lincecum. Quite simply, he is HOF worthy and my favorite pitcher of all time.
5. If the line is set at 106.5 games, are you taking the over or under for best 2061 PBL record?
I'll take the over with the Houston Astros ... and probably additional teams.
6. We have a genuine OOTP rookie in the league this season. What one piece of advice would you give Brandon to succeed?
Tend to your financials! Each year you should strive to generate revenue that exceeds expenses.
The ticket price is one key. Your goal should be to set the price to attract fans to the ballpark. Attendance at about 85% of capacity or more is a good goal. During the season (you may adjust the ticket price during the season), you may test the impact of price changes on projected revenue. Doing so should help you find the sweet spot. Avoid underselling your product by setting the price lower than it could be.
Also, strive to have a few popular to extremely popular players on the roster. Fans pay money to see popular players play. They help boost fan interest, attendance, and revenue.
And, of course, fans prefer teams with winning records. You can and should strive to be profitable while rebuilding. Winning will help your team generate additional revenue you can use to accelerate the climb to the playoffs.
7. What is your 2061 PBL World Series prediction? Winner lose and how many games?
Houston Astros will best the Washington Nationals in 6 games.
