April, 2060 **
Despite exploding out of the gates this season, the management team of the New York Mets Paramount Baseball League (PBL) will be keeping their emotions under control for the next few months or so.
The Mets General Manager, Harold Cornish spoke candidly with reporters at an impromptu press conference during the team’s practice facility at Citi Field. "Last season’s premature exit in the Wild Card round was definitely a tough one for us.” It was not at all what management had hoped for, and we vowed that we would do our best to make sure that those losing streaks are not repeated long-term.”
The 2060 season will be new territory for Cornish (his first full-time stint at the helm) and his management team, all of whom have won at every level they've been. "It's never easy to lose, never something you want to go through," Cornish said. "You never take it well. That’s the attitude that I want my players to adopt."
"This season the team will get the opportunity to show what it's capable of," Cornish said. "We won our season opener, and then posted a 16-5 record for the month of April. On the flip side, we have already lost 6 games, with 13 left to play in May.”
The Mets (25-12 at the time of this article) currently lead the NL Eastern Division by 4 games, but their mettle will be tested over the next 2 ½ weeks as they battle AL Western Division leader Colorado Rockies (24-13), NL Western Division leader San Diego Padres (23-14). “When you look at the teams that do well, they don't have significant lapses during a season. The task will be to maintain an even keel of emotions”, said Cornish, “and not get to high when we win or too low when we lose.”
"I want this team to start to fight, to play hard," Cornish said. “My goal this coming season is to get more fans into the seats and encourage them to support the team. I want the fans to see that we are playing hard every inning, and I want them to come out and cheer us on. If anything, that should give us confidence.”
The core of this year's team returns this season, led by the following fan-favorites: SP Pepe Quintana (7-4, 4.10 ERA), SP Mauro Huerta (7-2, 2.95 ERA), SP Juan Herrera (5-3, 4.97 ERA), SP Lucas ‘Deacon’ Winters (5-3, 2.67 ERA) and LF Hidetsugu Fujii (21 HR, 54 RBI, .351 AVG).
Cornish said that his team has a long way to go before it can secure a playoff berth in the be considered a legitimate contender in the NL Eastern Division, but with optimism, enthusiasm that Cornish and his staff have shown, as well as limited injury time, it will be interesting to see what develops over the course of the next few months.

Due to suspected corporate espionage, the article was hidden within the Metro Gazette offices after a break-in, and was just recently discovered. Some of the stats have been updated to reflect the status of the Mets' record as of June 21, 2060. The team has posted a record of 44-24 and hold a 6 game lead over the Montreal Expos.
