After last year we want to improve at a few positions starting at SP and add some more speed and contact - I think we accomplished both
Catcher – We have split position here - Hammack bats LH and will go against RHP with Portillo. This is our weakest position so we looked to defense with Hammack. We might look to upgrade this season if we stay competitive.
First Base – Eric Honess came back from injury almost 3 months early - never seen a recovery like that before and he is ready for the start of the season. He is getting older but had a 2.4 War last year and 4.4 the year before - Manny Ruiz will back him up with Mel Wolf learning how to play 1B.
Second Base – Bruce Boyer - What can you say about the Mathematician - You always worry about signing a free agent to a huge contract and him not performing. Well that didn't happen with a 7.1 War almost costing me 6 mil in a bonus. He Defense isn't the best its good enough.
Shortstop – I brought in Carlos Costello to compete with Ibarra at SS - It really wasn't a comp I wanted a higher average and Castello is the guy - Ibarra is a really good back up all over the infield and will be very valuable this year.
Third Base – Dave Jamison - He might be the best 3B you haven't heard of - Had a 5.8 War - hitting .327, 41 2b, 7 3b and 15 HR's. His defense is elite level to go along with it. He went to his 1st All-Star game last year. Him and LF Harrison came up at the same time and are a big reason for our success.
Left Field – Pedro Castillo - I gave up a good amount to get him - new to the team but hit .349 and had a war of 4.9 last year - pair him 1 - 2 with Boyer that is a deadly start to a lineup - He is LH too so he smokes RHP. His defense is strong to go along with Top Speed. Back up will be Cooper Velasquez who might get a few starts against LHP if we need some power.
Center Field – Michael "Best last name in the game" Powell - he was a pleasant surprise last year. He hit .270 35 2b, 7 3b and a 2.6 WAR playing CF - his Defense is elite earning his 1st Golden Glove last year. My LF Harrison will slide over to CF if needed and Velasquez can play RF. Manny Ruiz will back up all 3 positions.
Right Field – Patrick Harrison - Another player with a breakout year last year. Hit .279, 38 2b, 8 3b and 19 HR's with a 5.2 War. He is a Lefty with elite defense. He keeps getting better and has not had a War below 3 in his 1st 3 years.
Designated Hitter – Mel Wolfe - in 73 games he hit 23 HR's last year - that would be a 51 HR season if he stayed health. He was injured the 1st half of last year. I have been using him at 1b during spring training and he has caught on pretty fast - he will play some 1b this year to give Honess a rest.
Starting Rotation – #1 Mark Burns - a top 5 pitcher in the PBL #2 Fernando Sanchez He made a big jump from last year is is a very Solid #2 and could be a #1 on some teams #3 Ray Dickie added him this year - I wanted a strong LHP and an upgrade at the 3rd spot #4 Bubba Garrett the year before he had a 3.3 war great stamina and fits our team personality well - Also wanted a good LH option #5 Tom Stephan he has never lived up to his potential He could be replaced by 3 or 4 pitchers if he struggles. I have Larry Alexander, George Spence, Andrew Kirby and Trevor Sanchez ready to take his place.
Bullpen – This might be the best bullpen in the PBL - Everyone is 4 star or higher Start with CL Doug Rollins - 35 saves and a 3.0 War - Raul Miranda and George Carter Setup - Middle and long relief Juan Melendez, Angelo Valdez and Alberto Ramirez. Its balanced well with 2 LHP and very stong stuff up and down the bullpen.
Overall - this might be my favorite team I have assembled - there is defense, solid pitching, elite speed every where and we can hit for average - I hope the lack of power isn't our downfall. I think we will finish with 90+ wins and make a world series run.
