SAN FRANCISCO -- Six weeks into the young season, the Giants are struggling. Coaches still have not found a combination that translates into win totals representative of the talent on this squad. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are on fire. Today, GM Tim Ackley and the coaching staff decided to shuffle the deck sooner rather than later.
SP -- Mel Lutz, sidelined for nearly six weeks with elbow tendinitis, returns to the starting rotation after a short rehab assignment. He will provide the team with five very good options.
SS -- Three time Gold Gold winner Dana Brassard also returns from the IL after a rehab assignment in Fresno. He was off to a strong start when he sprained a thumb. With Brassard returning to shortstop, Raul Ramos shifts to second base, his preferred position, when facing right-handed starters. After Jack Gonzalez was optioned to Fresno, a couple players informed the coaches that while the club atmosphere seemed fine on the surface many players were pleased that Gonzalez will no longer be a negative influence in the clubhouse. That was an unexpected revelation.
CF -- During spring training, Lee McGee, who played well with the Giants during the last two seasons, lost his job to talented rookie Todd Williamson and was sent to Fresno. McGee has been crushing the ball in AAA (.396/.443/.730 with 8 SB) and Williamson has seemed overmatched facing PBL pitching. McGee has been recalled to platoon in CF and again lead off for the black and orange.
1B -- Chong-yeol So, who came on strong during the second half of the '54 season, has not yet found the groove in '55. We expect that he will do so while playing for Fresno. In his stead, talented rookie Jason Simms, who continues to hit very well at every level, has been promoted to the parent club. Currently, his slash line in AAA is .305/.420/.534. He appears ready to make his PBL debut.
Coaches and fans alike are hopeful the changes will inject life into the team. Go Giants!
