SAN FRANCISCO -- At a press conference held earlier today, Giants GM Tim Ackley formally announced the acquisition of Enrique Vazquez, who is regarded as one of the premier pitchers in the PBL. Vazquez returns to the organization that discovered him, developed him, and for which he pitched for eight full seasons after a brief call-up late in the 2041 season. Prior to the 2050 season, Vazquez was traded to the Kansas City Royals for whom he pitched during the last five seasons. Vazquez reclaimed jersey number 27, which he donned during the ceremony.
During his first stint with the Giants, the extremely popular pitcher compiled a won-lost record of 112-56 and won two consecutive Cy Young awards (2047 & 2048). Vazquez also led the NL in ERA (three times), strikeouts (twice), and K/9 (once). He is among the franchise leaders in several categories. While with the Royals, Vazquez earned a third Cy Young award. He also led the NL in innings pitched (three times) and wins (once).
This morning, Vazquez arrived in San Francisco. Yesterday, Enrique and his family visited several of their favorite venues one last time before moving to the Bay Area home they still own. Regarding his experience in Kansas City, Vazquez said that "we enjoyed living in the area very much. Yesterday, we spent a 'family day' again visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the adjacent American Jazz Museum. The exhibits are awesome. Afterwards, we dined at Arthur Bryant's Barbeque - a favorite of ours. My oldest son loves the burnt ends." Later he added that he "thanks the Royals organization, the fans, and the city for five wonderful years."
Vazquez returns as the ace of the Giants pitching staff. Ackley commented that "a pitching rotation that features Vazquez, Jake Moore, and Mel Lutz at the top of the rotation should pay dividends for us. We have quality starters to complete the 5-man rotation, a strong bullpen, and a very strong defensive team to provide support. At the plate, we are optimistic that we can score the runs we need to put wins on the board."
Ackley also volunteered that the team plans to arrange opening day ceremonies for the first game ever to be played in Presidio Park to include fan favorite Enrique Vazquez as the starting pitcher. The day should be a special one that everyone should experience in person!
