Now remember, once the Albatross list is posted it is illegal to sign any long term deals to trade. I mean, that's not actually true. But who among you would dare put your team's "needs" over the purity of my list?!?
LEGEND:
* A great contract. No need to worry.
** Has some downside, but could make you look pretty smart.
*** A few red flags that could go either way.

* A great contract. No need to worry.

**** This contract may be having a negative impact on the team.
***** Severe Albatross potential on every level.
Baltimore Orioles
**** (+1 star) Jon Young (SP)
- $62.38 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048.
- $62.38 Mill through 2050.
- $31.19 Mill team option in 2051 with a $8.5 Mil buyout.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- I feel like we all might have over-rated Young last offseason because he was the best pitcher in the 2046 free agency. That’s a very relative concept. It's like being the handsomest guy at the gas station, you know?
Boston Red Sox
***** (+1 star) Millard Nosworthy (1B)
- $20.5 Mill through 2048.
- $10 Mill vesting option in 2049 after 490 PA.
- Admittedly, it’s hard to hit above 50 homers when your average isn’t breaking the Mendoza line. I see more of the same for next year.
**** (No change) Carlos Sims (SP)
- $22 Mill player option in 2048.
- I severely under-estimated Sims’s potential to stay healthy for an entire season. That being said, even though ERA can vacillate from year to year, 2046 was his worst showing since his rookie year.
Chicago White Sox
Every year I feel like the White Sox are right on the precipice of selling off their best players, or signing them to mega-contracts. I’m always, always wrong.
Cleveland Indians
** (New) Alfonso Tellez (LF)
- $136.884 Mill through 2050.
- Player opt out after 2050.
- $36.72 Mill through 2051.
- $30.6 player option in 2052.
- $30.6 player option in 2053.
- Promised Position: Starting Lineup
- He’ll make nearly 45 million dollars on his 30th birthday. Not a bad life! But that’s a lot to live up to. But he’s no Hisamitsu Kanegawa. That’s the kind of cash only a perfect player can ever earn.
** (New) Dave Peterson (1B)
- $24.78 Mill through 2049.
- $10.26 Mill vesting option in 2050 after 550 PA.
- Promised Role: Starting Lineup
- The money’s good, the bat is there. It should be a perfect contract. If only the outfield wasn’t full up! My bet is that longshot candidate George MacKinney is benched by July and you’ll find Peterson in left field.
** (No change) Jason Royal (SP)
- $20 Mill through 2047.
- Player opt out after 2047.
- $16 Mill vesting option in 2048 after 180 IP.
- Promised Position: Starting Pitcher
- He’s definitely in career wind-down mode. That being said I think he’s better than what he showed in 2046. I’d say another 4 WAR year isn’t out of the question.
* (New) Roberto Serrano (LF)
- $19.24 Mill through 2048.
- $11.12 Mill vesting option in 2049 after 450 PA.
- You know there’s a Pedro Cerrano who plays for Cleveland in the movie Major League… Do you think that means that Roberto is a Jobu worshipper too? Have I made this reference before? I'm very confused.
Colorado Rockies
*** (New) Alden Jackson (RP)
- $22 Mill through 2048.
- $11 Mill team option in 2049 with a $2.75 Mill buyout.
- $11 Mill team option in 2050 with a $2.75 Mill buyout.
- When your team has the worst relieving corps in the league, you gotta do what you gotta do. The only question is whether I will regret signing a guy with only one decent pitch.
*** (No change) Armando Gonzales (SP)
- $33 Mill through 2049.
- $12 Mill team option in 2050 with $3 Mill buyout.
- $11 Mill team option in 2051 with $3 Mill buyout.
- $1 Mill bonus for 180 IPs
- I feel like Gonzales has a completely different career if he winds up in some different stadiums. Between the Rockies and the Phillies he’s been getting belted inordinately for quite some time.
*** (+1 star) Shawn Palmer (SP)
- $24.5 Mill through 2048.
- $12 Mill team option in 2049 with $3 Mill buyout.
- $11 Mill team option in 2050 with $3 Mill buyout.
- Here’s my worry, and it’s my only worry: His stamina keeps dropping. Every other skill seems to be holding up… But if he can’t pitch into the 5th inning with regularity he’ll start to become a liability.
** (No change) Duane Hansen (CF)
- $173 Mill through 2053.
- $16 Mill team option in 2054 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- $16 Mill team option in 2055 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- $2.5 Mill hitter award bonus.
- The man, the myth, the gout. It’s just a waiting game to determine just when his body will break down. And I hate waiting.
** (New) Roman Menocs (RF)
- $60 Mill through 2049.
- $15 Mill team option in 2050 with a $7.5 Mill buyout.
- $15 Mill team option in 2051 with a $7.5 Mill buyout.
- Promised Role: Starting Lineup
- This year, his contract is abominable. Next year? Right on par with what you’d want to pay. As long as he stays healthy and productive I won’t beat myself up over trading for him.
Detroit Tigers
***** (No Change) Jorge Siador (SP)
- $152 Mill through 2050.
- $38 Mill player option in 2051.
- The worst thing about last year's 1.7 WAR campaign is that he pitched in 33 games for 2046. When healthy he should have been so much better.
*** (New) Edgardo Ferreira (LF)
- $56 Mill through 2051.
- It’s not a huge extension, but Detroit doesn’t have a lot of money to throw around. I’d want to see him repeat his career-best 2046 campaign before hitching my wagon to him.
Houston Astros
*** (No change) Andy Hebert (1B)
- $57 Mill through 2049.
- Player opt-out after 2049 season.
- $38 Mill through 2051.
- $19 Mill player option in 2052.
- It’s kind of morbid watching albatrosses sometimes. I know Hebert isn’t getting any better, so I stare at him each year looking for signs of decay. I may be a disturbed person.
Kansas City Royals
A full minor league system? A disabled list without any healthy guys sitting on it? It’s a new day in Kansas City!
Los Angeles Angels
*** (No change) Carlos Martinez (LF)
- $43.5 Mill through 2050.
- I would like to see a lot more steals from Martinez. His moderate batting ability has got to be compensated by speed for him to have value through the life of the contract.
Minnesota Twins
** (No change) Joe Aitcheson (RF)
- $27.8 Mill through 2048.
- Okay. Here’s the game for this next year; How many homers does Aitcheson hit? I’ll let you pick any number between 0 and 3. Also, did I use a semi-colon correctly there? My guesses are 1 and no, respectively.
New York Yankess
*** (No Change) Adrian Frost
- $30 Mill through 2047.
- Player opt out after 2047.
- $50 Mill through 2049.
- $25 Mill team option in 2050 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- $25 Mill team option in 2051 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- Hmm. This time last year I would have wanted Frost to stay in his contract. Now, I’m not so sure. $25 Million bucks is a lot of coin to give to an innings eater. But I guess that doesn’t trouble the Yankees.
*** (New) Jose Rivera
- $12 Mill through 2047.
- $12 Mill player option in 2048.
- I’m not sure I understand this signing. Rivera strikes me as a DH these days, and that role is filled by Mario Eras.
*** (New) Xian-Yao Chew
- $55 Mill through 2048.
- $25 Mill player option in 2049.
- If this is the kind of money Chew got, I’m fascinated to see what the Yankees offered Alfonso Tellez. If I had to guess I would say they didn’t want to give Tellez the years he was asking for.
** (New) Andrew Sodowsky (CL)
- $32.5 Mill through 2048.
- $14 Mill player option in 2049.
- I considered getting into a bidding war with the Yankees for his services… Then I realized that unless I wanted to end up paying $20 million a year and a compensation first rounder I should leave well enough alone.
** (No change) Mario Eras
- $28 Mill through 2048.
- It’s funny. He’s got high Leadership qualities and low Work Ethic. Do you think that means that the people around him yearn to be as lazy as he is? I hope to inspire similar qualities!
* (No change) Rafael Fernandez
- $20.64 Mill through 2048.
- $10.32 Mill player option in 2049.
- He’s a deal. He’s a steal. He’s the sale of the century. But I'm not bitter about it!
Oakland Athletics
** (New) Carl Holmes (CF)
- $217.06 Mill through 2050.
- $21.6 Mill team option in 2051 with a $7.5 Mill buyout.
- $25.91 Mill team option in 2052 with a $7.5 Mill buyout.
- Near perfect fielder, near perfect runner, near perfect batter. NEAR PERFECT MONEY! Now that’s the kind of contract you’ve got to dole out for near perfection!
** (+1 star) Carlos Martinez (CL)
- $36 Mill through 2049.
- $10 Mill team option in 2050 with a $4 Mill buyout.
- Promised Role: Closer.
- This injury is a real blow to the A’s. Trotting out Martinez for 2 to 3 innings at a stretch was an almost unbeatable maneuver in the late innings.
** (No change) Markus Price (SP)
- $26 Mill through 2048.
- If he were on the Rockies instead of the A’s, I swear to you he adds a point to his ERA and drops a point in WAR. Stadiums, man…
** (No change) Mel Wolfe (2B)
- $80 Mill through 2050.
- $16 Mill team option in 2051 with a $8 Mill buyout.
- $16 Mill team option in 2052 with a $8 Mill buyout.
- I’m glad we changed the contract rules so that Oakland can stop handing out these ridiculously frontloaded deals. How I hate them.
* (New) Michael Jones (1B)
- $60 Mill through 2050.
- $15 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $15 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- Jones is a lot like Vincent Watson in that he’s a great hitter with the possibility to serve as a middle infielder. However, it’s just easier to put them both as super first basemen instead.
* (No change) Norris Barton (SP)
- $88 Mill through 2050.
- $22 Mill team option in 2051 with a $5.5 Mill buyout.
- $22 Mill team option in 2052 with a $5.5 Mill buyout.
- It’s fascinating to think about what a team would have to trade to acquire him. For example: The Brewers have 3 first round picks this year (4th, 11th and 18th). How much more would they have to add to the deal to get him? Would you be willing to trade the most valuable player in the AL for all three picks and Alfredo Sanchez? Would you need more? I spend a lot of time thinking about this.
Seattle Mariners
***** (+2 stars) Juan Serrano (3B)
- $72 Mill through 2050.
- Player opt out after 2050.
- $18 Mill through 2051.
- Last year was the kind of showing that I’ve been warning about for some time. Putting him on first will help some of the issues, but not all of them.
*** (New) Bradley Hatcher (LF)
- 29.46 Mill through 2050.
- I don’t know. I can see the value in Hatcher, but I see him more as a backup than a starter. Combined with his injury history, I stay away from this deal.
** (+1 star) Alex Edwards (RP)
- $15 Mill through 2048.
- Ever look at Edwards as a batter? I bet if he DH’d full time he’d have a .000 average and something like a .200 OBP. Not that anyone would want something like that, but wouldn’t that be weird?
** (-1 star) Mike Hickman (2B)
- $26 Mill through 2048.
- In retrospect, I wish I’d fought a little harder to sign Hickman. I was thrown by his low production in his early seasons, but in 2046 he hit with the kind of production you would want from him.
* (-1 star) Aurellio Marrujo (RP)
- $36.37 Mill through 2050.
- Not a shabby first year in the PBL. 11.3 K/9 is nothing to sneeze at.
* (New) Santiago De La Rosa (SS)
- $43.9 Mill through 2051.
- Can’t poo poo this deal. He’s a spectacular runner and an otherwise solid middle infielder. It’s almost a pity he can’t play outfield to become a super duper utility guy.
Tampa Bay Rays
***** (+1 star) Hadde Leider (RF)
- $41.4 Mill through 2051.
- $8.28 Mill team option in 2052 with a $2.5 Mill buyout.
- Ugh. What nasty turn of events. He’s a backup at best these days.
*** (+1 star) Joe Small (RP)
- $8.5 Mill through 2047.
- Player opt out after 2047.
- $8.5 Mill through 2048.
- $8.5 Mill player option in 2049.
- He’s been a fantastic closer, but who knows what will happen with a guy who is otherwise perfect, but could find his home run total skyrocketing. It’ll be fascinating to watch.
*** (New) Tetsunori Kokawa (C)
- $104.56 Mill through 2053.
- $14 Mill player option in 2054.
- An extension was probably the right move, but the years scare me. In general I don’t care for guys who might put up a low average/high power season. You never know when they’re gonna deliver a real stinker.
** (New) Ronald Simpson (2B)
- $40.475 Mill through 2051.
- $12.65 Mill player option in 2052.
- Who's the real Ronnie Simpson? The guy who batted .310 in 2046, or the guy who hit .254 a year earlier? I’d wager slightly more toward the positive end of the spectrum, but not too far in that direction.
* (No change) Terrence Henderson (1B)
- $41 Mill through 2048.
- What do you do with a guy like Henderson? Do you keep one of the most productive hitters around till he can't bat anymore, or do you test the market to see who wants a 38 year old superstar? Neither one seems like a great value for one of the best players of his time.
Texas Rangers
The Rangers are dangerous. I’m scared by any team that this good without relying on any long term money.
Toronto Blue Jays
Cesar Lopez has come into his own. And without any big money contracts, these Jays could vie for the crown in the AL East. Did I just use my jinxing powers for evil? Oops!
