LEGEND:
* A great contract. No need to worry.
** Has some downside, but could make you look pretty smart.
*** A few red flags that could go either way.
**** This contract may be having a negative impact on the team.
***** Severe Albatross potential on every level.
Arizona Diamondbacks
** (No change) Javier Espinosa (SP)
- 109.95 Mill through 2051.
- So, we’ve seen a year of Javier and can officially say… He’s okay? Whenever a new player comes into the league it’s easy to imagine the moon and stars. But if he’s an ace he’ll need to prove it.
* (No change) Ricardo Ramirez (C)
- $46.44 Mill through 2049.
- For the second year in a row his average has been pretty strong in the face of mediocre contact ability. I forsee a .220 year with 25 some homers in his future. But my predictions don't matter! He’s been great.
Atlanta Braves
**** (No change) Wayne Garza (3B)
- $52.5 Mill through 2049.
- $17.5 player option in 2050.
- Garza didn’t opt out. Unless you’re a starting pitcher, there wasn’t much chance of getting 17 Mill a year in this free agent market.
** (New) Eric Maddox (SP)
- $49.71 Mill through 2047.
- I am unclear if the Movement drops for OOTP 19 were actual changes in the ability of pitchers, or a recalibration in how accurately the game measures their actual ability. In either case, guess we’ll find out for Maddox if he gives up 50 long balls.
** (+1 star) Bob Gonzales (RP)
- $36 Mill through 2050.
- $9 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3 Mill buyout.
Serious question here. How many WAR do you think Gonzales would put up if he started? Could he get 1 or 2 on being a warm body alone, or would his lack of a third pitch ruin him? Just curious.
* (No change) Mario Soto (SP)
- $31.6 Mill through 2048.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- Now you’re in the danger zone, Atlanta. Next year you’ve got to choose whether to extend the star pitcher into his forties, or let him hit free agency. Even with a guy as great as Soto that can be an iffy proposition.
Carolina Warhounds
** (New) Jose Jimenez (C)
- $44.07 Mill through 2049.
- $14.69 Mill player option in 2050.
- If you’re gonna shell out the big money you want it to be for a guy who has put up this kind of consistent production. But man, if only he could actually play catcher.
Chicago Cubs
**** (New) Albert Garcia (SP)
- $73.21 Mill through 2049.
- Player opt out after 2049 season.
- $101.28 Mill through 2053.
- Promised Role: Starting Lineup
- Here’s my theory on international free agents: Their lack of a track record is simultaneously the appeal and the danger. A guy like Garcia has a ceiling as a 4 or 5 WAR guy. And he’s being paid for that ceiling, not his potential floor.
**** (No change) Terry Goff (1B)
- $31.8 Mill through 2050.
- He’s a replacement level guy making moderate money. It’s not that he’s eating a hole in the Cubs’ budget. But man, that cash could really be beneficial elsewhere.
** (New) Antonio Martinez (SP)
- $36.5 Mill through 2051.
- His BB/9 have dropped steadily as he’s become a reliable control pitcher. But the number of homers given up have slowly increased. Can’t fault the signing, but he’ll never be one of the greats.
** (New) Jorge Amador (RF)
- $67.5 Mill through 2053.
- $11 Mill player option in 2054.
- I would flat out love this contract if Amador was a centerfielder. But his range limits any usage at that position without a steep Zone Rating cost to pay.
Cincinnati Reds
*** (-1 star) Hisamitsu Kanegawa (LF)
- $79.36 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $238.08 Mill through 2054.
- $39.68 Mill player option in 2055.
- Year one of the Kanegawa experiment was definitely a success. The only downside is that between him and Vera, Cincy has become a city of two DH’s.
** (No change) Jeremy Miller (CF)
- $22.2 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $44.4 Mill through 2052.
- $11.1 Mill team option in 2053 with a $2.775 Mill buyout.
- Last year I posited that Cincinatti might move Miller if their budget gets tight. Well, if the team wants to extend both Gabriel Camacho and Sammy Brousseau, this might be the year to drop some salary.
** (No change) Masfumi Masuda (SP)
- $67.93 Mill through 2050.
- $18.98 player option in 2051.
- A sizable extension for a legitimate ace. A relic of the days when pitcher could still throw a changeup. But those days are gone now… We live in a post-changeup age.
* (No change) Jose Vera (1B)
- $52 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after the 2048 season.
- $52 Mill through 2050.
- $26 Mill team option in 2051 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- $26 Mill team option in 2052 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- I’m not sure how OTTP calculates these things, but in a real life scenario I’d be shaking in my boots about a Vera opt out. Think of the money he could get in free agency at 28.
Los Angeles Dodgers
**** (+2 star) Tomas Lugo (C)
- $87 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $29 Mill player option in 2049.
- Last year’s performance by Lugo was the kind of scenario I was warning about for Ricardo Ramirez. These types of catchers with long swings are either very high risk for very high reward. Last year, that reward didn't emerge.
** (No change) Raymond Page (CF)
- $130 Mill through 2050.
- $25 Mill team option in 2051 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- $25 Mill team option in 2052 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- For a guy like Page, .259/.353/.461 and 4.2 WAR counts as an off year. The problem is, at 35 million a year it might start to feel like an off year for the Dodgers as well.
Miami Marlins
Now under new management! Come see the corpse of Bruce Pinnock throw baseballs in the general direction of home plate!
Milwaukee Brewers
Through trades or the passage of time, the Brew Crew has shed all its long term deals. They’re on pace to nearly cut their payroll in half for 2048.
Montreal Expos
** (+1 star) Theron Law (SP)
- $24.25 Mill through 2049.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- Last year I jinxed the Expos. I’m sorry. It was my fault. I promise to never do it again!
New York Mets
**** (New) John Thomas (DH)
- $26.7 Mill through 2049.
- Homeruns are great. Who doesn’t love homeruns? Nobody, that’s who! But I can’t imagine loving them so much that I’d extend a non-fielding .200 hitter just to get them. That’s a bridge too far.
**** (+1 star) Lou MacDonald (1B)
- $36.6 Mill through 2049.
- This is a genuine mystery. I have no idea what happened to Lou MacDonlad last year. I don’t think it’ll happen again? All I know is he should never bat against a lefty again if it can be avoided.
** (New) David Segura (RF)
- $42 Mill through 2050.
- $12 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3 Mill buyout.
- One of the better outfielders on the free agent market, not named Alfonso. He’s coming off a poor season in Minnesota, but could put up some numbers with a little luck.
** (No change) Rus Noftle (SP)
- $49.20 Mill through 2050.
- $14.5 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.9 Mill buyout.
- Not much to say about his performance, but this is probably the moment for us to all sit back and think about what a weird name Noftle is. Like, it’s really weird, right?
Philadelphia Phillies
***** (No change) Billy O’Herlihy (SP)
- $33 Mill through 2049.
- $11 Mill player option in 2050.
- The Phillies were willing to pay their way out of the George MacKinney contract, so it will be interesting to see if they have the resources to do it again with Billy. It’s a rough situation.
*** (+1 star) Jose Morrles (SP)
- $59.5 Mill through 2050.
- He was a real nice signing, and then his UCL blew. They’ll get him back in August, so maybe he can still participate in some important baseball down the stretch.
Pittsburgh Pirates
*** (-1 star) Carlton Webb (2B)
- $24.3 Mill through 2048.
- $13.25 vesting option in 2049 after 500 PAs.
- $13.25 vesting option in 2050 after 500 PAs.
- Rumors of his demise were premature. He hasn’t swung the bat this well in nearly three years. Age is catching up with him, but he’s got a little more left in the tank.
*** (New) Mario Media (C)
- $74.25 Mill through 2053.
- I can see the value in a free swinging catcher like Media, but part of me wonders whether the Pirates will wind up regretting this contract a couple years in.
*** (+1 star) Orlando Martin (LF)
- $67 Mill through 2050.
- $17 Mill team option in 2051 with $4.25 Mill buyout.
- $17 Mill team option in 2052 with $4.25 Mill buyout.
- A few injuries kept him from reaching his potential last year. That’s going to be a risk with this contract from here on out.
* (No Change) Pierre Boucher (1B)
- $38 Mill through 2048.
- $19 Mill team option in 2049 with a $4.75 Mill buyout.
- Seeing Boucher win a World Series with Pittsburgh is a little like seeing LeBron win a championship with Miami. If Boucher goes back to Toronto and wins a title there THEN he’ll be a true legend.
* (No change) Ray Barry (SP)
- $26 Mill through 2046.
- Ugh. Putting up a 0.99 WHIP over 32 starts is absurd. Norris Barton can do it, but then again, Barton’s getting paid nearly double what Barry is.
* (No change) Tse-Tung Jue (LF)
- $49.2 Mill through 2048.
- $25 Mill team option in 2049 with $6.25 Mill buyout.
- Since Tse-Tung Jue makes me sad, I'm going to take this moment to talk about Jhoan Brown. WHAT A HUGE DROP IN HIS STUFF! Unprecendented. Fortunately the Pirates are done with him after this season. They squeezed every drop of skill out of that guy.
San Diego Padres
** (+1 star) Allan Hawkins (3B)
- $69 Mill through 2050.
- $15 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $15 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- That PCL injury is real rough. Can I mention here how bizarre it is that Jose Baez opted out of his contract with the Padres in the midst of a torn rotator cuff? I mean, what absurd self confidence he must have.
San Francisco Giants
***** (No change) Alfredo Pantoja (LF)
- $15 Mill through 2047.
- Player opt out after 2047 season.
- $45 Mill through 2050.
- $15 Mill player option in 2051.
- His body has finally broken down. If you listen closely you can hear every Giants fan in the Bay Area whispering, “Opt out… Opt out… OPT OUT!”
**** (+1 star) Hemmu Mahiri (SP)
- $96 Mill through 2050.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- I think this is one of contracts that will be hit hardest by the movement ratings drop. It’s a lot of money, plus a hitters park, plus a pitcher entering his 30s. A dangerous combo.
** (New) Enrique Herrera (RF)
- $58 Mill through 2051.
- $15 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $15 Mill team option in 2053 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- I feel like I should have had this contract on the list, but missed it somehow. Anyway. He had an absurd career year next year, and I’d bet money he can’t repeat it.
** (New) Enrique Vazquez (SP)
- $126 Mill through 2054.
- $20 Mill team option in 2055 with a $5 Mill buyout.
- That’s a hell of a contract. In the short term, it shouldn’t be a problem. But when his first major injury comes in a few years things could get pretty dicey, pretty quickly.
* (No change) Antonio Carrasco (RP)
- $48.0004 Mill through 2050.
- $12 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $12 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- I worry about the man’s health. He strikes me as a six month injury waiting to happen.
St. Louis Cardinals
*** (New) Brandon O’Slattery (RF)
- $25 Mill through 2049.
- He’s a solid trade chip EXCEPT he just can’t field. His ZR at every outfield position is abominable.
Washington Nationals
*** (New) Chris Allen (CF)
- $210 Mill through 2056.
- NO TRADE CLAUSE.
- $1 Mill MVP Bonus.
- WOW! I can’t argue the money. I gave up similar cash for Duane Hansen. But man oh man. 10 years? Anything can happen in 10 years. He could melt into a small green puddle in 10 years.
** (New) Christian White (2B)
- $39.54 Mill through 2049.
- $13.98 Mill team option in 2050 with a $3/295 Mill buyout.
- A bold trade for Washington. A clear upgrade in the middle infield over Guzman. The cost was a possible superstar pitcher, but Pedro Mulert’s ability is by no means guaranteed.
** (New) Robin Johnson (CF)
- $109 Mill through 2051.
- $23 Mill team option in 2052 with a $5.75 Mill buyout.
- NO TRADE CLAUSE.
- $1 Mill MVP Bonus.
- I swear, the Nats now possess the only two No Trade Clauses in the league. This one is less scary to me than Chris Allen’s though.
