With Spring Training underway I thought it would be a good time to run down to the newsstand and grab one of the Baseball Annuals off the shelf. Here is what one magazine has to say about the NL South Division.
Washington Nationals Last Year 2nd 93-69
The Nat's made a big splash this off season adding shortstop Christian White to an alway potent lineup that features two of the league's most dangerous hitters in Chris Allen and Robin Johnson. A late season injury to Allen was probably the difference between winning the division and falling 1 game short last year, so his return to health is vital to Washington's pennant plans. Franklin Jones re-signed and will fill out a solid rotation that features veteran Curt Major, up and coming Josh Arnold and steady lefty Luis Lopez. All signs point to another strong year for the Nationals
2047 Prediction- 1st 96-66
Carolina Warhounds Last Year 3rd 90-72
The Warhounds have taken their post season hopes into the final week the last 2 seasons but have been unable to grab the elusive brass ring. This off season Carolina was busy adding a top of the rotation starter in Bryan Smith and lengthened their lineup with the additions of young outfielder John Howe and veteran 2nd baseman Brian Merritt. Most significant however might be the Hounds commitment on the financial front- signing key players Jose Jimenez, Jose Garza and Mario Colon to extensions. The Warhounds have loaded up and should break through the post season barrier this year
2047 Prediction - 2nd 94-68
Atlanta Braves Last Year 1st 94-68
A quiet off season may have dropped the Braves back in the pack a bit. Atlanta still features the division's deepest rotation led by Mario Soto and Fred Caballero. Last year's rookie reliever Bob Gonzales appears to be poised to emerge as a elite closer. Wayne Garza and Eric Honess anchor a solid lineup, but the batting order has been weakened by the losses of Cole Lewis, Mario Medina and John MacGamwell . There is concern whether they can keep up in the competitive South.
2047 Prediction- 3rd 84-78
Miami Marlins Last Year 4th 63-99
The Marlins have seen numerous changes in their front office the past few seasons and fans are excited by the news that proven General Manager Ron Harrison has now taken over the Miami rebuild. The Fish have reason to be optimistic with a strong farm system that should yield a pair of stud starting pitchers in Sarsa-Dengal Robienayai and Bartolo Roman, but they are a year or two away. Meanwhile the Marlins will have to relay on veterans like Michael Dwyer, Michael Gray and Eduardo Parra in the rotation and a solid bullpen featuring Jake Thompson and Dave Gosewisch as they steer towards better days.
2047 Prediction- 4th 61-101
