With one day left in April I thought we would take a look at the report card.
Starting Pitching- At least for the time being the Hounds are going to go with a 4-man rotation. Luis Negron was out of this world his first two starts but has fallen back to earth is last 2 outings. We need him to be more consistent. Howard Nichols has yet to find his stride this young season, while Mario Colon and Ki-Nam Im have been steady performers. The big hit has come in the person of Yeong-Sam Kim. Kim lost all of last season to injury, but was being counted on to earn a rotation spot this year. The problem is while he is now injury free his stamina took a drastic hit from a 6 rating to 3, making him essentially unusable as a starter. GRADE: C
Relief Pitching- A couple of rocky appearances have jacked up a few of my fireman's ERAs, but overall the pen has done it's job. My biggest concern is the lack of a true proven closer, but so far I have been able to get saves from 3 different relievers and with only 2 blown saves I am pleased with the effort of the pen. GRADE: B
Line Up- The top of the lineup featuring Jose Garza and Jen-Kan Hu has been solid. George Martin and Kyu-Soo Kim have done a more than respectable job at the bottom of the order. It's the middle of the lineup that has killed us. No one has caused me more pain than my star catcher Jose Jimenez. To say the normally reliable Jimenez is struggling would be an understatement. He has been horrific, batting .139 with a meager .306 slugging percentage. And without Jimenez hitting this offense will struggle to score runs. GRADE: D
Overall- You would think with a 11-14 I would be pretty upset, but our April schedule has been brutal. We haven't played a single team with a sub .500 record as we have taken on The Giants, Mets, Padres, Braves, Nationals, Pirates, Reds and Cubs. When you consider we had a winless week and a 7 game losing streak, 3 games below .500 is not too bad. GRADE: C+
Outlook- The schedule gets easier starting this week. I am confident that Jimenez will start hitting and I am hopeful that the 4 man rotation with an 8 man bullpen will maximize the talent we have and produce better results. I expect that by the end of May the Warhounds will have risen to at least a couple of games over .500
We will check back and see how we look after the 2nd month.
