NO ALBATROSSES FOR YOU!
Washington Nationals
***** (+1 star) Jorge Guzman (2B)
*** (-1 star) Blaine Ritter (RF)
Arizona Diamondbacks
** (New) Javier Espinosa (SP)
- 131.94 Mill through 2051.
- He came from nowhere! Who is he?!? What has he come for!?! Can he actually pitch? Maybe???
** (-1 star) Ricardo Ramirez (C)
- $61.92 Mill through 2049.
- Still wary of him. Was his 31 homer year a function of the Great Recalibration of 2045? I just can’t tell.
Atlanta Braves
**** (No change) Wayne Garza (3B)
- $15.5 Mill through 2046.
- Player opt out after 2046 season.
- $52.5 Mill through 2049.
- $17.5 player option in 2050.
- I was complimenting Garza’s fielding during trade talks with Atlanta. He was quick to point out that it would be a lot better if Garza wasn’t made out glass. Can’t deny it. That would be better.
*** (New) Shannon Hastings (RP)
- $20 Mill through 2047.
- In the same trade talks I mentioned above I happened to mention how Hastings was a broken corpse of a man, not realizing that Atlanta had just signed him from free agency. Umm… Oops?
** (New) Bob Gonzales (RP)
- $45 Mill through 2050.
- $9 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3 Mill buyout.
- I was in on Bob during the free agent bidding. I just couldn’t bring myself to give him 6 years. But in retrospect, I’d take this contract if I could get it.
* (No change) Mario Soto (SP)
- $47.4 Mill through 2048.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- Really, the only question I have about Soto is how the Braves got a guy known for his greed and disloyalty to sign such a reasonable contract. It was compromising photos, I bet.
Carolina Warhounds
Ki-nam Im had a rough experience last year, but with his 2047 team option he’s no Albatross.
Chicago Cubs
*** (New) Roman Mencos (LF)
- $90 Mill through 2049.
- $15 Mill team option in 2050 with a $7.5 Mill buyout.
- Promised Role: Starting Lineup
- The Cubs bought real low on Roman, but they didn’t give up too much for him. He can’t earn his salary for the next two years, but he could be an interesting asset once his salary drops by half.
*** (New) Terry Goff (1B)
- $39.291 Mill through 2050.
- It’s not a bad deal, but I just don’t see what it is about his skills that really merits an extension. I feel like you could get this same guy on free agency cheaper. Just doing a quick search there’s an unemployed guy named Fernando Alfaro whose seems to be the exact same player.
Cincinnati Reds
*** (New) Hisamitsu Kanegawa (LF)
- $119.04 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $238.08 Mill through 2054.
- $39.68 Mill player option in 2055.
- Can you imagine the kind of brass balls would a player have to have in order to opt out of this contract? I mean, we’re talking cantaloupe size or larger, right?
** (-1 star) Jeremy Miller (CF)
- $33.3 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $44.4 Mill through 2052.
- $11.1 Mill team option in 2053 with a $2.775 Mill buyout.
- I think that when the Cincinnati budget finally gets squeezed so tight that someone has to move (and that has to happen eventually, right?) that Miller is the guy you might want to trade for.
** (No change) Masfumi Masuda (SP)
- $22 Mill through 2047.
- The Cincy ballpark has got to be a factor here. You put this guy on Oakland and I bet he puts up two more WAR. Um… Please don’t put this guy on Oakland.
** (No change) Roberto Limon (2B)
- $24.55 Mill through 2047.
- $14.5 Mill team option in 2048 with a $3.625 Mill buyout.
- $14.5 Mill team option in 2048 with a $3.625 Mill buyout.
- It’s real weird. I would have expected some better fielding from a guy with his skills. I just can’t imagine why he wouldn’t be able to put up a decent Zone Rating at third.
* (New) Jose Vera (1B)
- $78 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after the 2048 season.
- $52 Mill through 2050.
- $26 Mill team option in 2051 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- $26 Mill team option in 2052 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- It’s amazing, but true. The Kanegawa signing makes Vera’s contract positively thrifting.
Los Angeles Dodgers
** (-1 star) Raymond Page (CF)
- $165 Mill through 2050.
- $25 Mill team option in 2051 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- $25 Mill team option in 2052 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- I bet it’s nice to see your star player get ever so incrementally cheaper. Hey! Did you guys know Page spent most of last year playing second base? How weird is that!
** (-1 star) Tomas Lugo (C)
- $87 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $29 Mill player option in 2049.
- Huh. Turns out if you hit 30+ homers and walk over 100 times you don’t really need to hit over .300. Strange, but true: He has a career total of -0.6 WAR against lefties.
Miami Marlins
Oooo. Miami got so lucky that Chris Bryant retired. Enjoy your free $18 Million!
Milwaukee Brewers
*** (+1 star) Christian White (SS)
- $52.72 Mill through 2049.
- $13.18 Mill team option with a $13.18 Mill buyout.
- I want to say he’ll have another 5 WAR season. I really do. In all honestly, I’m not really sure why he hasn’t even come close the past two years.
*** (No change) Diego Villegas (LF)
- $10.5 Mill through 2046.
- $11.5 Mill player option in 2047.
- Won’t destroy your team or anything. He’s just aggressively average.
** (New) Soren Snabel (SP)
- $25.04 Mill through 2047.
- $12.52 Mill player option in 2048.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- One of the rare guys with a Prankster personality. On an unrelated note, I might test the market for him at the deadline if the Brew Crew is out of contention.
* (-1 star) James Guzman (2B)
- $24.44 Mill through 2047.
- Welcome to the 30-30 club James Guzman! I still have no idea how he got caught stealing 11 times.
Montreal Expos
* (New) Theron Law (SP)
- $29.25 Mill through 2049.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- Am I crazy or does this Expos team have a few really solid pieces? I say this is the year the Quest for .500 is achieved.
New York Mets
*** (New) Lou MacDonald (1B)
- $43.255 Mill through 2046.
- He’s got enticing ratings, but we’re getting to the point where it’s hard to ignore that he’s only broken 3 WAR once in his 5 year career. I’m not sure he’ll ever do so again.
** (New) Rus Noftle (SP)
- $56.3975 Mill through 2050.
- $14.5 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.9 Mill buyout.
- Russ is solid. A true innings eater. That’s not always a compliment, but for him it is.
Philadelphia Phillies
***** (No change) Billy O’Herlihy (SP)
- List item 1$44 Mill through 2049.
- $11 Mill player option in 2050.
- Oh, Billy boy. What are we to do with you. Just stay out of the hospital! Just for one season!
***** (No change) George MacKinney (LF)
- $30 Mill through 2047.
- $16 Mill player option in 2048.
- It’s a rough deal. He’s in the DH spot now, but he needs a platoon-mate who hits against lefties. I think he’s tradable, but the Phillies would need to swallow a lot of contract.
** (New) Jose Morrles (SP)
- $67.5 Mill through 2050.
- Was he a compensation player last year? I just can’t figure out why I didn’t try to sign him myself. Maybe it was his crappy Slider? I can’t tell.
Pittsburgh Pirates
**** (+1 star) Carlton Webb (2B)
- $50.8 Mill through 2048.
- $13.25 vesting option in 2049 after 500 PAs.
- $13.25 vesting option in 2050 after 500 PAs.
- What an insane season Webb had last year. There’s really no excuse for a guy who steals 56 bases to have 0 WAR. I’m not even entirely sure how that happens.
** (New) Orlando Martin (LF)
- $74.5 Mill through 2050.
- $17 Mill team option in 2051 with $4.25 Mill buyout.
- $17 Mill team option in 2052 with $4.25 Mill buyout.
- Seriously though. I think WAR broke last year. When a .304 hitter with 39 homers is only worth 3.5 wins over a replacement player, I wanna see that damn replacement player!
* (No change) Jhoan Brown (SP)
- $40 Mill through 2047.
- I’m interested to see how much the Pirates need to give him as an extension to keep him from testing Free Agency. I mean, you have to extend him till his arm falls off, right?
* (No change) Obke Jansen (SP)
- $31 Mill through 2047.
- $16 Mill team option in 2048 with a $4 Mill buyout.
- I guarantee you that Pittsburgh turns Obke into a monster trade chip very soon. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon.
* (No Change) Pierre Boucher (1B)
- $57 Mill through 2048.
- $19 Mill team option in 2049 with a $4.75 Mill buyout.
- Hmmm. The Pirates steal Pierre Boucher out of my clammy, obsessive grip, and then immediately wind up nose-diving to SECOND PLACE IN THE DIVISION! Can you say karma?
* (No change) Ray Barry (SP)
- $43.69 Mill through 2046.
- Oh man. If players this good are going to start giving Tom Brady-esque hometown extension discounts to the Pirates, then then rest of us are in real trouble.
* (No change) Salvador Nunez (SP)
- $28 Mill through 2047.
- The crazy thing is, he was already a really good pitcher. Then 2 years ago he starts pitching 2 extra strikes per 9 nine innings. That’s a substantial jump!
* (No change) Tse-Tung Jue (LF)
- $73.2 Mill through 2048.
- $25 Mill team option in 2049 with $6.25 Mill buyout.
- When a durable player goes down with a long term injury it feels like such a betrayal. Except when it happens to the Pirates. Then it feels like justice.
San Diego Padres
** (New) Jose Baez (SP)
- $14 Mill through 2046.
- Player opt out after 2046 season.
- $7 Mill vesting option in 2047 after 180 IP.
- $7 Mill player option in 2048.
- I thought real hard about trading for Baez, but I couldn’t let go of the 16th overall pick for him. But the Padres low first rounder is just about the right value. Still scared that he opts out, though.
* (-1 star) Allan Hawkins (3B)
- $69 Mill through 2050.
- $15 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $15 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- The Great Recalibration of 2045 doubled his homers. DOUBLED! Lets see how the Moderate Re-Recalibration of 2046 treats him.
San Francisco Giants
**** (No change) Alfredo Pantoja (LF)
- $30 Mill through 2047.
- Player opt out after 2047 season.
- $45 Mill through 2050.
- $15 Mill player option in 2051.
- Those 45 homers are great and all, but 115 strikeouts and batting .244 make them a little less impactful.
*** (New) Hemmu Mahiri (SP)
- $119 Mill through 2050.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- The Giants bought low on his massive contract in 2042 and he’s given them two shaky years and two exceptional ones. All things considered, they won the trade and got out clean! But this extension locks them right back into the roller coaster.
*** (+1 star) Octavio Hernandez (1B)
- $27 Mill through 2047.
- $13.5 Mill team option in 2048 with $3.375 Mill buyout.
- The difference between a strong year and a mediocre year for Hernandez is about 20 hits. If he makes those extra 20, you’re golden. If not, he disappoints. You never know how those 20 hits are gonna go.
*** (New) Rob McCoy (2B)
- $17 Mill through 2047.
- $17 Mill player option in 2048.
- It’s a little off color. I’m sorry. But the whole “Rob McCoy gets an extension and then somehow becomes a free agent” fiasco made me think of this clip, running from 22 sec to about 37 sec.
*** (New) Tomokazu Kouyama (SP)
- $30 Mill through 2047.
- I’m a little flabbergasted here. In a year where more hitters are slamming them out of the park than any other, a guy with mediocre cheese like Kouyama somehow manages to give up a miniscule 12 homers. Gotta say. The man earned his money.
* (-2 stars) Antonio Carrasco (RP)
- $60.0005 Mill through 2050.
- $12 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $12 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- I like to think the negotiation went this way: “$99 Million? NOT GOOD ENOUGH! I demand an extra hundred dollars a year or I walk!”
St. Louis Cardinals
NO ALBATROSSES FOR YOU!
Washington Nationals
***** (+1 star) Jorge Guzman (2B)
- $26 Mill through 2048
- Just don’t like him. In fact… I may even hate him. I hate you Jorge Guzman. I HATE YOU FOREVER. Sorry. It’s the end of the semester and I haven’t slept in a couple days.
*** (-1 star) Blaine Ritter (RF)
- $21 Mill through 2047.
- Only losing a star because his contract his getting progressively cheaper. He doesn’t fool me. I know where that power jump came from.
