This year is Pablo Cordero’s last year being a burden on society, so he’s technically not an albatross.
Washington Nationals
**** (+1 star) Blaine Ritter (RF)
**** (New) Jorge Guzman (2B)
*** (+1 star) Kent Catron (SP)
- 25.63 Mill through 2047.
- Kent just is who he is. He looks like he should be a stud pitcher but he gives up just a few too many homers and just a few too many walks to approach greatness.
*** (New) Ricardo Ramirez (C)
- $78.4 Mill through 2049.
- The ability is still there, but this is a man who has been utterly decimated by injuries the past two years. I prescribe an immediate switch to DH.
Atlanta Braves
**** (+1 star) Cole Lewis (RF)
- $30.1 Mill through 2046.
- $16.5 Mill vesting option in 2047 after 550 PAs.
- Hey! I said he wouldn’t break 30 homers last year and he didn’t! Guys! I was right about something! Now, let me give you directions of where the parade should march.
**** (New) Wayne Garza (3B)
- $35 Mill through 2046.
- Player opt out after 2046 season.
- $52.5 Mill through 2049.
- $17.5 player option in 2050.
- He as a lot of great attributes, but two potentially devastating qualities as well. His allergy to lefties should raise questions, and his recent injury woes should inspire terror.
* (New) Don Holloway (SS)
- $26.49 Mill through 2047.
- The rough thing about him is that despite his ratings, he’s kind of a crappy shortstop. You put him at second or third base and I bet he increases a WAR or two in value from where he already is.
* (No change) Jose Gutierrez (C)
- $26.4 Mill through 2047.
- No real issues here. Right skills, right price. Talk about boring.
* (No change) Mario Soto (SP)
- $63.2 Mill through 2048.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- If a pitcher this perfect can’t develop his changeup, what hope is there for mere mortals?
Carolina Warhounds
Don’t think I can count Maximo Caraballo as an albatross. TRY HARDER.
Chicago Cubs
*** (New) Kazuyoshi Iwamoto (3B)
- $30 Mill through 2047.
- Not quite getting the bat on the ball like he used to. Still valuable, especially in the hot corner, but expect more in the range of a .250 hitter from here on out.
** (New) Jorge Gonzalez (2B)
- $30.58 Mill through 2046.
- $13.79 Mill player option in 2047.
- I was certain he’d be receiving a contract in the realm of what Hoshi Nakashima got, and I was pleasantly the surprised to see him sign for such a reasonable amount/time period. The bad news is, this guy is not second baseman. He’s a 1B/DH if I’ve ever seen one.
** (New) Manuel Kane (SP)
- $19.8 Mill through 2046.
- $17 Mill team option in 2047 with a $6 Mill buyout.
- $17 Mill team option in 2048 with a $6 Mill buyout.
- With the A’s paying 40% of his salary for the next few years, Kane is a solid deal. However, it remains to be seen if injuries will force him into the bullpen before his time.
Cincinnati Reds
*** (No change) Jeremy Miller (CF)
- $41.65 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $44.4 Mill through 2052.
- $11.1 Mill team option in 2053 with a $2.775 Mill buyout.
- And like clockwork, the post-huge contract malaise set in. That low OBP really beomes a liability when he’s not hitting .300.
*** (No change) Millard Van Pelt (SP)
- $16 Mill through 2045.
- $16.5 Mill vesting option in 2046 after 30 GSs.
- His contract was just shy of vesting last year, but the Reds went for an extension of more or less the same money. He’s been consistent the past two years, but I wouldn’t put it past him to randomly put up a stinker.
** (-1 star) Gabriel Camacho (SP)
- $32.14 Mill through 2046.
- Finally a solid year from this guy. That wasn’t so much to ask for, was it?
** (+1 star) Masfumi Masuda (SP)
- $32.97 Mill through 2047.
- I don’t like how many walks he’s been giving up. About 4 per game is too many for a guy of his skills. What gives?
** (New) Roberto Limon (2B)
- $31.7 Mill through 2047.
- $14.5 Mill team option in 2048 with a $3.625 Mill buyout.
- $14.5 Mill team option in 2048 with a $3.625 Mill buyout.
- No arguments with the contract really, except I do wonder when Cincy’s budget for shelling out big money to younger stars will begin to run out. It has to eventually, right?
* (New) Jose Vera (1B)
- $89.55 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after the 2048 season.
- $52 Mill through 2050.
- $26 Mill team option in 2051 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- $26 Mill team option in 2052 with a $6.5 Mill buyout.
- I can’t fault the extension. I suppose I stare at it and see what I’m going to have to give to Duane Hansen in a year or so. It chills me to my very core.
Los Angeles Dodgers
***** (+1 star) Tony Encarnacion (SP)
- $31 Mill through 2046.
- Player opt out after 2046.
- $17 Mill team option in 2047 with an unknown buyout.
- $18 Mill team option in 2048 with an unknown buyout.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- I was wrong. This guy’s toast. He’s the one unfortunate blemish on an otherwise perfect 2044 for the Dodgers.
*** (No change) Raymond Page (CF)
- $205 Mill through 2050.
- $25 Mill team option in 2051 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- $25 Mill team option in 2052 with a $10 Mill buyout.
- I have to admit that last season Raymond Page put together a World Series winning season that was definitely worth $40 million dollars. Now let’s see him do it again.
*** (No change) Tomas Lugo (C)
- $115 Mill through 2048.
- Player opt out after 2048 season.
- $29 Mill player option in 2049.
- It’s hard to argue with a 5.1 WAR season, but I do think that he’s developed a hole in his swing against lefties which make it highly unlikely for him to put up .300 seasons in the future.
*** (New) Roman Mencos (LF)
- $101.59 Mill through 2049.
- $15 Mill team option in 2050 with a $7.5 Mill buyout.
- Promised Role: Starting Lineup
- I would not make give this extension... But then again, I also would not have won the World Series in 2044. This is why my opinions should be taken with a gigantic grain of salt.
** (New) Danny Hayes (SP)
- $25 Mill through 2045.
- $25 Mill vesting option in 2046 after 180 innings pitched
- $25 Mill team option in 2047 with a $6.25 Mill buyout.
- One of the best pitchers in the game is gonna command this type of money, but in his late thirties it’s not a bad idea to parcel out that money with options like this.
Miami Marlins
***** (+2 stars) Chris Bryant (SP)
- $18 Mill through 2045.
- $18 Mill player option in 2046.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- Yeah. No way he’s not taking that 2046 option. Sorry there Marlins. Maybe you could package him with some draft picks to a team with budget to burn?
Milwaukee Brewers
*** (New) Diego Villegas (SP)
- $20 Mill through 2046.
- $11.5 Mill player option in 2047.
- I dunno. This past off-season wasn’t that great or anything, but I still feel like there were guys with skills equivalent to Vilegas who could have been acquired for less. Just not sure what he brings to the table, you know?
** (New) Christian White (SS)
- $59.32 Mill through 2049.
- $13.18 Mill team option with a $13.18 Mill buyout.
- There’s one big problem for White: The Brewers don’t have any space in the infield to take advantage of his fielding ability, so he’s moldering in the outfield. In this market you could trade a guy like him for max value and find someone who can play the open position.
** (New) James Guzman (2B)
- $32.565 Mill through 2047.
- When you find a solid middle infielder with power, you gotta lock that down. No issues here.
** (New) Soren Snabel (SP)
- $37.56 Mill through 2047.
- $12.52 Mill player option in 2048.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- Is a very consistent pitcher, but every now and then he has difficulty striking guys out. That’s what differentiates his best seasons from his mediocre ones.
Montreal Expos
I believe in the quest for .500. 2045 is the year! No albatrosses, though.
New York Mets
***** (+2 stars) Timo Segaar (SP)
- $19 Mill through 2047.
- $6 Mill player option in 2048.
- Timo’s officially replacement level. If he was on Montreal I’d say they should trade a pick to dump him. But since the Mets found their stride last year I’d worry their picks would be too low to entice someone into eating the money.
**** (No change) Luis Salas (1B)
- $17.6 Mill through 2046.
- He didn’t hit .250 last year! That’s my second correct prediction! I AM NOSTRADAMUS!
* (-1 star) Alden Jackson (CL)
- $14 Mill through 2046.
- $7 Mill player option in 2047.
- Um. He gave up 2 homeruns in 74.1 innings last year. That is utterly insane. That’s a HR/9 of 0.2. He gave up one fifth of a homerun a game. That fraction gobsmacks me.
Philadelphia Phillies
***** (+1 star) Billy O’Herlihy (SP)
- $55 Mill through 2049.
- $11 Mill player option in 2050.
- It’s real rough to look at his skillset. He should have the ability to be a lights out starter. But between his injury proneness and his lack of a viable third pitch he absolutely cannot be a reliable starter.
***** (+2 stars) George MacKinney (LF)
- $44 Mill through 2047.
- $16 Mill player option in 2048.
- Philly! Get him out of the outfield and into the DH spot and he’ll stop hemorrhaging runs for you! It doesn’t have to be this way!
*** (New) Alvin Raymond (1B)
- $35.12 Mill through 2046.
- Last year Raymond had the kind of season that I’m hoping to pry out of my own aging DH, Jerome Reynolds. I think I’ll hold my breath till it happens.
Pittsburgh Pirates
*** (+1 star) Carlton Webb (2B)
- $50.8 Mill through 2048.
- $13.25 vesting option in 2049 after 500 PAs.
- $13.25 vesting option in 2050 after 500 PAs.
- I’m sorry but when I find a Pirates contract that I don’t like I have to bask in it for a second. It’s like laying in the sun on a Caribbean shore.
* (No change) Jhoan Brown (SP)
- $60 Mill through 2047.
- If you consider injuries as part of the skill rankings, he’s probably the second best pitcher in PBL. I’d only put Norris Barton of the A’s above him.
* (No change) Obke Jansen (SP)
- $45 Mill through 2047.
- $16 Mill team option in 2048 with a $4 Mill buyout.
- I’m not crazy right? Obke is fourth in Pittsburgh’s rotation? How is it even possible to have a guy this good be your fourth best pitcher?
* (New) Pierre Boucher (1B)
- $68.75 Mill through 2048.
- $19 Mill team option in 2049 with a $4.75 Mill buyout.
- First base. I want to cry.
* (No change) Ray Barry (SP)
- $35.38 Mill through 2046.
- What can I even say about this guy? With superstar players it’s so boring. How many different ways are their to say, “He’s great.”
* (No change) Salvador Nunez (SP)
- $42 Mill through 2047.
- I will continue to scream into the void that Nunez did not look like he’d hit these heights when I traded him. Sure, he was a solid pitching prospect, but nothing like this!
* (No change) Tse-Tung Jue (LF)
- $95.2 Mill through 2048.
- $25 Mill team option in 2049 with $6.25 Mill buyout.
- It should be noted that the Pirates are definitely in a different phase of dominance, where they’ve invested heavily in their best players instead of relying on a never-ending stream of cheap young prospects.
San Diego Padres
***** (No change) Robbie Gill (SP)
- $38 Mill through 2046.
- Well, I looked through the passel of guys that San Diego drafted with the picks from the Gill trade. You never know how they’re going to develop, but it might not be worth it in the long run.
** (New) Allan Hawkins (3B)
- $65.332 Mill through 2050.
- $15 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $15 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- Would be significantly more valuable if he was left-handed. Also, probably could have used some more time in the minors sharpening up his fielding at third.
San Francisco Giants
**** (+1 star) Alfredo Pantoja (LF)
- $45 Mill through 2047.
- Player opt out after 2047 season.
- $45 Mill through 2050.
- $15 Mill player option in 2051.
- CAUGHT JUICING! I’ve often wondered whether the game reduces a player’s power after they stop taking their sim-roids. Guess we’ll find out.
*** (New) Antonio Carrasco (RP)
- $60 Mill through 2050.
- $12 Mill team option in 2051 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- $12 Mill team option in 2052 with a $3.75 Mill buyout.
- There’s one very specific reason why I can bear giving relievers this many guaranteed years; If their skill depreciates, there’s no place to put them. Burnt out starters can become relievers, but burnt out relievers just become doorstops.
** (New) Octavio Hernandez (1B)
- $40.5 Mill through 2047.
- $13.5 Mill team option in 2048 with $3.375 Mill buyout.
- A little pricier than I’d like, but I have to admit that power hitting first basemen without any glaring flaws at the plate are a little tricky to find these days.
St. Louis Cardinals
This year is Pablo Cordero’s last year being a burden on society, so he’s technically not an albatross.
Washington Nationals
**** (+1 star) Blaine Ritter (RF)
- $33 Mill through 2047.
- Question: Why does a guy with this kind of speed only have three stolen bases to show for 2044? Even with injuries he’s got to swipe a bag more often than that, right?
**** (New) Jorge Guzman (2B)
- $36 Mill through 2048.
- Sure, he’s led the lead in walks before. But other than that he doesn’t bring much to the table for me. Maybe if he could just field second a little better.
