PBL history was made this past sim by Arturo Rivera hitting his 600th career home run, a 438 ft shot. To make the day even more special, Rivera reached this milestone against his former team and at his former home.
"This is all just surreal for me. To be able to do this in front of the fans that have supported me for my 11 seasons in San Diego...this place will always be home for me."
Rivera decided that 1 home run wasn't enough, and hit a 468 ft bomb in the top of the 7th.
"I've still got some gas left in the tank, and I love playing with these guys. I haven't felt like this about a team since my early days in San Diego. We just really all gel together, and we're playing great ball right now."
This season has been one of milestones for Rivera, as he also achieved his 2,500th career hit earlier this season.
"I honestly didn't know if my career was done," Rivera commented after becoming a free agent this past offseason, "San Diego offered me a year deal, but I felt like I was worth more. The market didn't feel the same way, but Cincinnati gave me an opportunity to play the game I love and be on a competitive team."
The Reds hold a team option for next year on Rivera, but many within the industry question if he will be a Red next season. GM Sean Bain had this to say about him.
"Arturo is part of our plans now and next season. He's done everything we've asked him to do this year and we want him to be here as long as he wants to be."
Rivera didn't want his new hometown fans to feel left out or have his comments misinterpreted from earlier.
"The fans in Cincinnati have welcomed me with open arms and have been packing GABP every night. I love the atmosphere in Cincinnati and can't wait to get back to play in front of them. At 40, it's sometimes hard to get up in the morning but being around these fans, this team, this organization...I'm just excited for this opportunity and I don't think we are done yet."
