The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have shocked the baseball World by announcing the return of one of the PBL's founding GMs, Sam East. East returns to the league after a self-imposed absence of 12 years.
East started his PBL career with the Seattle Mariners. During his 16 years with the M's he won the AL West Pennant 11 times, and reached the post season a total of 14 times leading the M's to World Series appearances in 2011 and 2023. For all their post season appearances the Mariners won their first and only World Series in 2018 after a comprehensive 4-1 victory vs. the Marlins. That Mariners team included current and future Hall of Famers Bryan Anderson, Giralldo Croner, Marc Krauss, David Cortes and Felix Hernandez. Without notice, East walked away from the Mariners after the 2026 season with a 1608-1147 record explaining to puzzled fans that he 'needed a new challenge and a team to rebuild'.
That team turned out to be the expansion franchise, the Montreal Expos. This role turned out to be a lot shorter for East, who seemed to struggle to recreate the Mariners magic with his new team. That said, East was able to lead the Expos to their last three post season appearances in 2027-2029 compiling a 286-200 record. Then, for the second time East walked away from a winning team and this time away from the league he had been a part of for the past 19 years. The reasons for this exit were never fully explained. However, rumors of extreme financial irregularities in Montreal and a scandal involving the former Miss. Venezuela, Miss. Jamaica, a missing shipment of cocaine seized by the FBI and one of the best stocked wine cellars in the Western World, have followed East back to his home country of England.
Angel's fans in wrestling masks react to the news that they have a new, old General Manager
Now 13 years later and East has returned West and joined the LA Angels. At a hastily arranged press conference he was quick to acknowledged his predecessors Mark Fagenson and David Jones "Mark and David have built a well balanced, successful team here. I'm excited to start working with the players and I'd be a fool to change too much. We're set up to win now and that's exactly what I intend doing". He was less revealing when asked about his whereabouts for the past 12 years and his plans for the future. It's understood that East was initially looking to take on a team rebuild but that his increasingly desperate financial position caused by alimony from three failed marriages to former Miss. Worlds have forced him to take the Angels job.
Time will tell whether East can replicate his previous success. Now aged 68 and having been out of baseball for many years the increasingly unpredictable General Manager ended his first Angel's press conference with a heart felt 'It's damn good to be back!...'
