2033 77-85 .475
2034 77-85 .475
2035 78-84 .481
2036 72-90 .444
2037 60-102 .370
2038 56-106 .346
2039 70-92 .432
2040 54-108 .333
2041 73-89 .451
Fans and mgmt alike are tired of losing seasons year after year. Last season's 73 wins was the most since the 2035 campaign. The Cubs made lots of moves this offseason to try and get on the winning side of .500. As Opening Day approaches, let's preview the upcoming season at Wrigley Field, examining the likely lineup, bench, pitching staff and bullpen.
Lineup Preview/2041 stats:
1. Joe Aitcheson (CF) .303/1/25
2. Chris Berry (RF) .279/14/74
3. Terry Goff (1B) .290/21/83
4. Alfredo Pantoja (LF) .294/54/153
5. Jerome Reynolds (DH) .253/23/78
6. Jose Mojica (C) .276/21/56
7. Jack Crittenden (2B) .252/6/31
8. Tony Williams (3B) .221/2/25
9. Nariaki Ito (SS) .246/3/30
Bench/2041 stats:
SS Jeremy Erwin .308/6/36 at AAA Pawtucket (Red Sox)
C Elliott Crousse .223/12/58
RF Norogumi Imano .259/3/24
1B Michael Wilson .338/17/42 at AA Mobile (Rule V from Miami)
Chicago fans and mgmt are excited to have reigning AL MVP Alfredo Pantoja on the team this season. Back to back seasons of 50+ homer runs and 130+ RBI, Pantoja is a monster addition to this team and anchors a lineup stuffed with some really talented guys. Terry Goff, just 25 y/o, enters his 3rd season with the Cubs since joining them in the Rule V draft 2 seasons ago. He had a very solid year hitting and played solid defense at first base (.994 fielding %). Catcher Jose Mojica, only 27 y/o, also had a breakout type year. Newcomer Joe Aitcheson, acquired in a trade with Cleveland, will lead off for the Cubs replacing last year's leadoff hitter, 3B Nakashima traded to the Red Sox this offseason.
Starting Rotation Preview/2041 stats:
1. LHP Kung-zheng An - 14-11 4.15 ERA
2. RHP Jeff Lewis - 4-5 4.18 ERA
3. RHP John Miller - 6-11 3.86 ERA
4. RHP Mel Jordan - 11-11 4.26 ERA
5. RHP Matt Pearson - 11-11 3.93 ERA (TEX)
The Cubs will roll with a right-hand heavy starting rotation to open the season. The club is searching for some lefties both for the pen and possibly for the rotation but for now, Kung-zheng An is the rotation's sole lefty. The 37 y/o, claimed off waivers from the Warhounds last season, is back for a full season with the Cubs in 2042. Last year he was 6-4 with a 4.18 ERA and a solid WHIP of 1.11 in his 13 games with Chicago. He is the team's opening day starter and is being looked at to provide stability to the rotation. Matt Pearson was signed in the offseason to replace departed Jose Baez. There isn't really a clear #1 guy among the group and none of them are very exciting but all of these guys are veteran pitchers who know how to pitch.
Projected Bullpen Preview/2041 stats:
RHP Jose Castillo - 4/5/3 3.21 ERA (Tampa Bay)
RHP Frank O'Cassidy - 8/11/0 4.65 ERA
RHP Claudio Moran - 2/2/3 3.95 ERA
RHP Dan Gamble - 2/3/2 4.30 ERA
LHP Carlos Montano - 3/1/7 4.98 ERA (AA/AAA)
RHP Jacob Anthony - 3/3/3 2.70 ERA (Baltimore)
RHP Bradley Valdes - 4/3/9 2.95 ERA
The Cubs will look to Bradley Valdes to close out games for them again this season. He did very well last year and there is no indication that the 27 year old will have any problems locking down games for the club again in 2042. Jacob Anthony was signed to a one-year deal in the offseason to setup and close, if necessary, having closed games for in the past. As the only lefty in the pen at the moment, Carlos Montano, will certainly have a prominent role on this team. The 23 y/o Montano was once a very promising prospect in the organization but some injuries have taken their toll on the youngster robbing him of his once solid control. The kid can still bring the heat with a fastball that tops out between 94-96mph. He had a cup of coffee with the ML club last season where he appeared in 7 games, all in relief, compiling 8 innings of work and 10 strikeouts (just one walk). Frank O'Cassidy can provide relief or start if necessary. He started 26 games last season but his best work was as a reliever and that's where he will start the 2042 season.
