With the 2040 first year player draft half over I thought it would be interesting to see how last season's draft class is fairing. So here is the 2039 top 10 draft class:
1. SS Pierre “Bullet Ben” Boucher, Toronto Blue Jays - Drafted #1 overall, Boucher started his pro career at Single-A Lansing where he tore up the league hitting .308/2/11 in 52 at bats. Boucher was quickly promoted to high-A Dunedin where he struggled a bit hitting just .194 in 72 at bats. In 2040, the Jays sent Boucher to AAA Las Vegas, some insiders felt that was too far a leap after some of the struggles he had at A+ ball last season. He would prove the critics wrong by hitting .318/2/7 in 17 games, earning a promotion to the big leagues. He is currently a starter for the Jays and is hitting .250/4/15 in 124 at bats. He is ranked the #6 prospect in the PBL.
2. SP Eric Gorman, St. Louis Cardinals - The Cardinals sent the 20 y/o Gorman to Rookie ball after the draft. He would end 2039 , pitching in just 4 games, with an ERA of 9.37. The high ERA may make some question whether Gorman deserved a #2 selection but he did strike out 20 in just 16.1 innings, and 4 games is such a small sample size. This season, Gorman looks to be still at Rookie ball and has no 2040 stats yet.
3. SS Michael Flagell, Montreal Expos - The 19y/o Flagell was sent to Rookie ball after the draft. In 2039 at Rookie-West Virginia, he would hit just .100 with no homers or RBI in just 10 at bats. The Expos have Flagell slotted to start 2040 at West Virginia - Rookie ball. He has not stats yet. Flagell is currently ranked the #61 prospect in the PBL.
4. SP Ramon Ramos, Chicago Cubs - The Cubs wasted little time signing the Ramos to a contract so they could get him out there and pitching at some level in 2039. Ramos was sent to low A Boise where in 9 games he was 2-3 with a 3.30 ERA. He also had 49 strikeouts in 46 innings. In 2040, Chicago decided to keep the 20y/o at Boise. He has no stats yet since Boise's season does not begin until late June.
5. SP Rob Jacobson, Houston Astros - Jacobson started his pro career pitching at Rookie ball Greeneville. The southpaw was 2-2 with a 4.69 ERA in 8 games at Greeneville. The Astros slated him to begin the 2040 season at high-A Lancaster where he has not earned a decision in 2 games. He has a 4.00 ERA and has whiffed 18 in just 9 innings flashing that 95-97 MPH heater. Jacobson is currently ranked the #96 prospect in the PBL.
6. SS Mel Wolfe, Cincinnati Reds - The Reds sent Wolfe to Rookie ball-Billings after the draft. He hit .500/1/3 in just 14 at bats for Billings but earned a place at AA Carolina to start the 2040 campaign. In 173 at bats at Carolina, Wolfe hit most everything thrown at him hitting .301/10/39. The Reds felt the kid was ready for AAA so they sent him to Louisville. He is currently batting just .191 with 2 homers and 4 RBI in just 11 games. Wolfe is currently the #31 prospect in the PBL.
7. RF Robert Bland, Houston Astros - 19y/o Robert Bland was the 2nd pick in the top 10 for Houston. The Astros sent him to start his pro career at Rookie-Greeneville. He hit a respectable .278/5/13 in 79 at bats for Greeneville. This season, thinking Bland needs more maturing, Houston has him slated to start 2040 at Greeneville. He has no 2040 stats yet.
8. CF David "Snake" Segura, New York Mets - Unlike the other PBL GM's who chose to start their draftees out at rookie or single A ball in 2039, the Mets chose an aggressive approach to developing "Snake" by sending the then 22y/o kid to AA-Binghamton. The kid would hit .222/6/24 in 189 at bats. This season, the Mets have Segura at AA-Binghamton again. Segura is hitting .260/4/23. He is currently the #28 prospect in the PBL. His 2040 season ended in mid-May with a wicked bad concussion which will keep him out of action for 4-5 months. He should be ready for spring training in 2041.
9. SS John "Slewfoot" Beatty, Atlanta Braves - The Braves sent Beatty to Rookie-Danville after the draft. He would go on to hit .375/0/4 for Danville in 24 at bats. The Braves moved Beatty to A-Rome where he showed his awesome bat by hitting .310/2/10 and swiping 15 bases in 20 tries. Slewfoot started the 2040 season at AA-Mississippi where he absolutely tore up Southern League pitching hitting .347/1/19 and swiping 14 bases in 22 attempts earning a promotion to AAA-Gwinnett. At Gwinnett, Beatty is again hitting well batting .295 and stealing 7 bases in 9 attempts. He has been named the #43 prospect in the PBL and looks to be well on his way to stardom.
10. SP Andrew Hicks, Washington Nationals - Washington sent Hicks to start 2039 at A-Vermont. He would start 9 games for Vermont earning a record of 2-3 and an ERA of 3.40. He struck out 46 batters in just 39.2 innings of work. His WHIP was a touh high at 1.26, the hits (35) are what got him in trouble as he only walked 15 batters in those 9 games. The Nats liked what they saw in the kid so they have him at AA-Harrisburg in 2040. So far this season, the kid has started 11 games and earned a 2-3 record to go along with his 3.83 ERA. Control has been a bit of an issue this season. He has surrendered 6 homers in 51.2 innings and has allowed 53 hits to go along with 28 walks. He is currently ranked the #64 prospect in the PBL.
Personally, my favorite pick in the top 10 is Beatty. I love the combination of hitting for high average and swiping lots of bases, with a high percentage of success, makes him my pick for best in the top 10. What's yours?
