I know, I know, I have long said that I didn't necessarily want to participate in slack for PBL but in another league I'm in it works pretty slick.
Do we have one setup for the PBL? If not, does someone know how to do it?
After using it for awhile now, I've been converted and definitely see the value in it.

I have said my piece on slack in the past. These forums are the best i have seen in OOTP. Addition of slack would take away from that.
I get it, i understand slack, and Im letting personal preference play in here for me, but this would become a completely different league in my eyes if we became a slack league.

Slack is a better version or AIM.
We use slack in parallel with the forums for SBL and well the forums have 30% of the activity they once had. So keep that in mind. It's an awesome program. I use it in 4 leagues

I believe it will create a split between people who like slack and people who like forums. I guess i don't want or need real time communications. I get excited coming to the forums and seeing new posts.
I feel info can get easily lost on slack, and for those who don't visit it a bunch during the day, or have it on their phones, can be left behind with hundreds or thousands of messages...
I don't see the benefit to it for our league. We have a fantastic league, with great gm's and a active and vibrant message board. I don't want that to change!

I get it, i understand slack, and Im letting personal preference play in here for me, but this would become a completely different league in my eyes if we became a slack league. I'm not saying to scrap the forum but it really does make general one on one discussion easier. I am in a couple of Slack leagues, but have to agree with Earl 100%. PBL has thee best forum in any league I have been in. Slack will, without question, take away from that...because of what Sean suggests. It simply will. Yes, Slack promotes one-on-one (that can be done thru PM's here, especially if you have things set to notify you of a message, as you can with Slack). My 2c of experience is that Slack favours people that sit on it or monitor it a LOT (I am not one of those ). And those that love Slack tend to steer away from the forum (probably opposite can be said too). Because of that, things tend to happen on Slack, roll by, and only those involved in the conversation tend to know what happened UNLESS the gist of the conversation is recorded somewhere (like the forum), which tends not to happen. In fact being in a discussion like this on Slack would require you to pretty much be there at the time (or scroll back to re-read past material, which is tedious imho). Plus, and feel free to debate this point, I believe Slack taxes the Commissioner quite a bit more because those using Slack seem to need answers FAR quicker (as in instantaneous) than the forum environment. And some tend to get irate if they are not promptly answered. Slack is current technology while the forum may be old, if not ancient, technology, to a great extent. As I stated, I utilize Slack (probably poorly) in other leagues, but in the case of PBL especially, I fully endorse this forum.

I think Slack could be a nice addition because it is actually not a good format for the things that make the boards great. I like slack for trade negotiation and generic chatter. But it is not a great place to post a trade block. It is not an acceptable place to post sim schedules or any other information a GM needs to know. It is not a great place to post a team summary or projections or any kind of an article. It is not great for these things specifically for the reason David pointed out. You need to be involved in slack real time. Scrolling back through what you missed since the last time you logged on is tedious.
On the other hand, the boards (in my opinion) sometimes get a little noisy with chatter. That back and forth chatter is exactly what Slack is great for.
Our boards are great and they are sufficient for our needs. But I think there is an opportunity here for an additional venue for people to participate.

I am not opposed to having Slack set up for the league for reasons like Ron has stated (trade talks) but I am really picky with being organized and so I plan on sticking to the forums for the PBL. I don't think I could handle doing half here, half on forums. It would drive me mad. The forums are something special here for sure, 77,202 posts and counting and there is a lot to love about it.
