14. Milwaukee Brewers 13. Oakland Athletics (not eligible for lottery due to this being a comp-pick) 12. St. Louis Cardinals 11. Cincinnati Reds (not eligible for lottery due to this being a comp-pick) 10. Cincinnati Reds (not eligible for lottery due to this being a comp-pick) 09. Philadelphia Phillies 08. Cincinnati Reds 07. Texas Rangers 06. Detroit Tigers 05. Los Angeles Angels 04. Detroit Tigers (not eligible for lottery due to this being a comp-pick) 03. Montreal Expos 02. Washington Nationals 01. Colorado Rockies
a very straight forward lottery this year with one new comer (David in LA) getting shafted and falling from the potential first overall pick down to fourth and the newest member of the league (Stefan in COL) has joined us with a 4-leaf clover up his ass as he jumps up to the first overall pick in the draft!
Must be very exciting to just join a league and find out draft is starting and you nabbed the first overall pick.

So, according to this I have actually dropped from 1st overall to the #5 pick because of Detroit remaining in the #4 position. Even worse! STILL picking in the Top FIVE assures a pretty decent player to add to the stable of talent slowly developing in LA.

Didn't that happen to the previous Angel's owner all of the time also? I seem to recall someone getting hosed every year of the draft.

Honestly, this draft lottery sucks ... the teams fighting as hard as they can to win as many games as possible get screwed year after year Picking at # 14 basically is a waste of time ... anybody interested to trade for my # 14 pick ?

I'm confused as to your thought process here. Are you saying the teams that have better records should be getting earlier picks?

I think he is lamenting the fact finishing in the middle of the pack is a waste of time. Either tank and get the high pick or win and get to the post-season. Drafting 14th doesn't net the high-end prospects that top 5's do.

The comment just doesn't seem to offer anything as an alternative to the current system or any actual reasoning. I'd like to know how the draft should be in his opinion.

I can completely understand the frustration, but there isn't really any better way to do the draft unfortunately. The average-below average teams can easily get stuck in a kind of cycle of mediocrity where they don't get the draft picks to become contenders, yet they don't do bad enough to get the draft picks

Sorry guys, I was a bit frustrated when I saw that I ended up with # 14 ... but basically it really is a waste of time.
You were bad enough the previous year to be way out of the pennant race but not bad enough to at least get a decent draft pick.
Also, with the time difference and not wanting to hold up the draft I won't trade the pick - thanks for the offers, guys !

I'm still a bit confused.
Picking 14th doesn't mean the lottery sucks, it means your picking exactly where you finished in the standings. No team in the lottery picking 12, 13 or 14th has ever moved up in the lottery. The odds are about 1% (So I'm saying there is a chance!!).
Its funny because everyone things you need a top 5 pick to get great guys but if you look at history the players in later rounds develop too. Mid first round pick that always sticks out to me is Marvin Webb, I think he went 17th. The talent is there, but at some point teams need to make a more strong effort to win games in this league and not settle on building through the draft. If you do your always going to be not bad enough to not get the top pick but not good enough to make the playoff.
I understand the frustration though because nothing is worse than being in that trap.

Honestly, if you can't find a decent player at 14, it's really on you. There are plenty of good players left to take at this point.
Maybe adjust your style, because if you think "tanking" is the way to get better then I question why you're not doing it. You'll probably say that you're not that gm to tank orwhatever which is fine. If that's the case though, then I don't understand your complaint.
You still haven't offered any alternatives or reasons for why the draft is bad other than the obvious one, my team just isn't very good.
