Now that the budget crisis is over and most of the free agents remaining aren't all that good, I thought it would be a good idea to float a few statements, ask a few questions, and propose a few things for the league going forward. It's good to do this now before the hubbub of the season.
1) The new Marlins are using a PBL default logo and not the sweet looking avatar you dug up/created Commish. Is there any way it can be implemented in the game?
2) How are we going to handle the Marlins new stadium? It'll be small, and since the game doesn't understand that fewer seats tend to drive demand up, and usually mean an increase in luxury box seating and pricing, the Marlins might be worse off.
Do we want to assume that the new stadium will automatically mean more coverage for the Marlins and bump up their media revenue slightly? Raise their market size slightly? Do we want to bump up fan interest? Leave everything alone?
3) From what I know, there's no way for non-commish GM's to edit histories for players without those histories reverted back after the next sim. With a handful of players from my 2010 draft class inching closer to being Major League ready, I'd like to be able to commemorate important milestones like, say Rick Carson's debut, and Luther Good's first strikeout. I also know that this would be a tedious and time-consuming process for you as GM. Are there any alternative paths that can be brought up to put these histories into place?
4) Early in the first season in the league, I proposed the idea of making the league dynamically evolving. Most GM's at the time rejected the idea stating that they didn't want to play in a fictional league (Interestingly enough many of those GM's left during the initial season and never returned...). I figured that since it was an MLB world it was probably presumptuous of me to want to a dynamically evolving league so I let the topic go, deciding that it should be at least five years before any fundamental changes to the league take place.
There is a new crop of owners in place to surround the core that has stayed from the league's inception, and we are approaching year four. I think it would be a good idea for me to at least ask for the league's opinion on the possibility of a near future where the league begins to dynamically evolve.
Most possible changes wouldn't be able to take place because they would interfere with the structure of the league. For example, changing the waiver or DL time is illogical as we need it to set up with our days per sim.
However, a few things like out-of-the-blue relocations, team name changes, changing the number of games per season, changing the roster sizes, changing the refuse demotion length, free agent minimum service time, adding or removing the DH from a league, plus having the league evolve to a pitching dominated era, to a hitting dominant era all are possible and might be fun.
In my solo league the league has evolved both seasons I've run it which is far too many. There's also the possibility for something historically sacred to change, like having the Chicago Cubs change their name to the Chicago Sea Bass or something equally ridiculous. But if the commish manages it so only one thing changes every three or four years, it might add some fun to the league.
5) I've forwarded this before but it was during the budget crisis so it didn't get much feedback, but I think we should have the gaming and promotions department of the league be used to implement points that can be turned into cash, or saved and used for more permanent upgrades, like more seats, a bigger media contract, even new stadiums.
For example, last year I earned four points for the Pick'Em which was good for second, plus one of the two points for Fact or Fiction. You can say that tying for first place in the FoF nets me three extra points, and being second in the Pick'Em gets me an extra two. That's 10 points.
We can give each point say a cash value of 500,000 that could be cashed in each offseason. We'll limit it that you can only cash in the points you accumulate for that season.
However, you can also use the points for more long-term upgrades. Say 10 points can net somebody an extra $1 million in media revenue or 5,000 seats to a stadium, and 25 points can net a GM a jump in market size. 100 points can net somebody a new stadium if he so preferred with an automatic increase in fan interest, perhaps a small media contract spike, etc.
6) I haven't forgotten about the schedules. I'm almost done with the NL, but making sure they all turn out properly is a 300-ton bitch. I should have them ready for the 2014 season.
Anybody have any thoughts to any of these points?
