And With the First Pick- The Arizona Diamondbacks made a really good pick grabbing Robin King to kick off the ‘55 draft. King has been a solid pitcher, racking up 84 wins with a nice 3.74 ERA. Following up the first pick Tampa Bay made a great selection choosing Dan Anderson. The switch hitting outfielder has established himself as a dependable hitter who helped the Rays to a World Series win. Yes this draft was going nice and smooth but that was about to change with the 3rd pick.
Biggest Busts- High School Pitchers! The 3rd- 4th and 5th picks all were high school arms and the results were ugly! Picking 3rd the Athletics chose Clarence Dren. Dren pitched in 189 minor league games and never once stepped on a major league mound. Currently a free agent- at least Dren is still trying, which is more than we can say about the 4th and 5th picks of the draft. Houston and Toronto missed on their picks of 18 year old pitchers Allen Bird and Tracy McKinney. Both pitchers are no longer active and I was unable to find any history about either of them. If someone remembers them and can share more of their stories I would love to hear it.
So Many Picks- This was suppose to be the Toronto BlueJay draft! The Jays had 5 of the first 15 picks in this draft and the results were….well mostly bad. The first 4 - #4 McKinney, #11 Left fielder Russ Scott, #13 Pitcher Garland Wilson, #14 Pitcher Tony Flores had a combined war of -1.4. Ouch talk about wasted draft picks. However Toronto hit it out of the park with the 15th pick selecting power hitter Brian McSimon and salvaging their draft.
Best Career (So Far)- Nationals ace Dan Gallaghe was picked 34th and has already compiled a steller 69-33 record while twice leading the NL in K’s/9
Great Value- This draft had numerous late round gems. Some of the best were Houston’s 6th round pick Dan Castro, Arizona snagged Arnold Roman in the 7th. Reds picked up Al Sackett in the 9th round and the 12th round yielded Patrick Cooke to the Orioles and Tristan Donovan to the Giants.
Best Overall Draft- Colorado came away with 3 solid players in this draft. They picked up Nathan Carter, Phil Rodriguez and Chris Butc- all impactful players. However the Rockies did trade both Carter and Rodriguez for some veterans that provided short term results but are no longer in the league.
There you have it- a look back at a draft past. See you all back here next season.
