According to the Canadian Consumer Research Foundation, as of December 2062, Ontario had the most grocery stores among all provinces in Canada - there were 5,321 grocery stores located in Canada’s most populous province.
Due to a growing movement to tackle the growing environmental concerns, the majority of the super chain stores had announced that starting in April 22 (Earth Day) of 2063, that they would start to phase out single-use plastic grocery bags and instead offer customers paper bags for their shopping needs.
For example, Jayco anticipated that the change would prevent almost three-quarters-of-a-billion plastic bags from entering circulation each year. Herb Rathbone, Jayco Canada’s chief operating officer told reporters, “This change will help to eliminate more than 10 million pounds of plastic from entering circulation each year in the Toronto area.”
Unfortunately, Alberto Echebaria, Principle Owner of the Toronto Blue Jays of the Paramount Baseball League (PBL) single-handedly sabotaged this environmental initiative. Echebaria has such tight control of his purse strings that he makes Ebenezer Scrooge looks like Philanthropist of the Year!
In 2062, fan favorite, RF Dave Gonzalez achieved the following awards for his outstanding play:
- 3 x PBL AL Player of the Week
- PBL Batter of the Month
- PBL AL All-Star Selection
- PBL AL 2062 MVP (2nd Place)
- PBL AL 2062 Platinum Stick Award at RF
Echebaria notified Blue Jays GM Harold Cornish that he would not have any funds to acquire Free Agents or offer extensions to existing players. Despite the many accolades that were mentioned above, Echebaria refused to negotiate a renewal of Gonzalez’ contract, causing him to file for Free Agency. Gonzalez ended up signing a 4-year, $106,000,000 contract with the New York Mets, and the Jays fans revolted!
Fan support plummeted to a dismal 62 rating, and a movement is underway across the country encouraging fans to voice their displeasure by wearing paper bags over their heads when attending a Blue Jays game. Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey club offered to loan their bags to Jays fans, but swarms of disgruntled viewers descended upon the grocery stores to clean out their existing stock of paper bags. The crowds were so huge that several stores arranged to have security guards to manage the angry “mobs”.
When asked for a statement, GM Harold Cornish said that he was too emotional at the moment to conduct a proper press conference, but he did say that he appreciated the support shown by the fans last season, and that he fully understood their displeasure with the loss of Gonzalez.
Last season the Blue Jays posted an 81-81 record, the teams' best performance in over 9 seasons, placed 1st in the AL East Division and reached the playoffs. They also had the best attendance in the league at 4,085,368 but Cornish said he wouldn't be surprised if that number was cut to half by the end of this coming season.
Stay tuned for ongoing updates.
