The Cincinnati Reds announced today that OF Hisamitsu Kanegawa and CL Curtis Bates would be signing 1 day contracts with the team, and would be retiring from the PBL. After the formalities were completed, GM Sean Bain announced that both players would be having their numbers retired this year (7 and 57).
"Both of these guys were key pieces of many great teams over the years. We want our current players to play the same brand of baseball they did day in and day out, and we definitely will have them around as much as possible. Our fans are going to get a chance to show their appreciation this season when we officially retire their numbers inside GABP."
Kanegawa finished his 15 year career with 533 HR(5th in the NL), .284/.368/.535, 2,378 hits, and 1,459 RBI. Kanegawa ranks 1st in Reds history in single season batting avg at .357, SLG % for his career .564 and single season .697, OPS single season 1.112, Career WAR 52.3, career runs 1,138, single season hits 211, total bases 3,742, Home Runs single season 59 and Career 469, and the RBI single season mark of 140. Kanegawa was Rookie of the Year, a two-time MVP, 5 time All-Star, 4 time Silver Slugger, Playoff MVP, and World Series Champion.
Bates finishes his 22 year career with 535 saves (3rd in the NL, 6th overall), 1,232 games, 80-96 W-L record with 1,686 strikeouts in 1,307 innings with a 2.89 ERA. Bates ranks 1st in Reds history in career ERA 2.72, single season saves 48 and career 497, games pitched 969, career strikeouts per 9IP 12.2, OAVG career .209, OSLG career .323, and OOPS career .605. Bates was a 2 time reliever of the year, 9 time All-Star, and 3 time World Series Champion.
