Ten seasons go by so fast, let’s take a look back at the 2050 draft-
And With the First Pick- The Carolina Warhounds take 3B- Jimmy Green. Best you can say about Green is he has been a consistent homerun hitter- hitting between 21 and 26 dingers over the past 6 years. Things might be looking up for Green now. After 5 years in Carolina he had his best season last year for the WhiteSox and in the off season signed a new four year deal with the Expos.
Best Career (So Far)- This is a tough one to call with 4 players drafted in the top 16 with a 20+ WAR. After serious number crunching and numerous coin flips the winner of best career so far goes to Dave Baker. Drafted 5th overall by Detroit, Baker has averaged 42 homers and 117 rbis and has been the main reason for the Tigers rise from long time pretenders to solid contenders. Want a crazy fact about Baker? - Despite his great numbers he has only made One All Star appearance! Talk about a serious injustice!
Biggest Bust- The Biggest Bust of the”50 draft is awarded to the 13th pick overall Robert Greene. Taken by the Blue Jays the tall hard throwing right hander struggled throughout his brief career. With only 14 PBL starts and 64 appearances total- Greene compiled a 5-9 5.42 record and was out of organized ball at the age of 30.
Great Value- The Dodgers uncovered a gem in the 5th round when they drafted relief pitcher Johnny Lee. Unfortunately for LA they quickly traded Lee to the Mets in one of the most lopsided trades you would ever want to see. Lee has emerged as one of the league’s premier closers, leading the NL in Saves this past season.
Last Man Standing- He didn’t get drafted until the 24th round but in 2058 Seattle Pitcher Nathan Williams pitched in 41 games out of the Mariners bullpen with a respectable 1.27 whip. Not bad for such a late pick.
Best Overall Draft- The Atlanta Braves had 5 players they chose in this draft make a long trek to the big leagues, including two All Stars in Mark Burns and Patrick Harrison.
That’s all for now. See you all back here next season for another Draft from the Past.
