Raul "Moo" Gallo is a 25 year old Starting Pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers. "Who is he?" you may ask, "and how did he get the nickname 'Moo'?". Both are valid questions, and questions that I had as well when looking at Gallo for the first time. I couldn't answer the latter question.
Let's take a little bit of a closer look at Gallo. Born in Santa Ana, California in September of 2022, he excelled at baseball from a young age. In High School, Gallo, a loyal and hard working kid, was developing into an elite pitching prospect. His talent wasn't quite enough to get drafted out of high school however, and he opted to head upstate to attend Fresno State University. At Fresno State, he excelled, posting an impressive 12.6 K/9 as starter in his senior year, along with a 2.33 ERA, due in large part to a 99-101mph fastball. This was enough to make him an elite prospect in the eyes of scouts, and the Cardinals proceeded to draft him with the 7th overall pick in the 2044 PBL Entry Draft.
Gallo's journey to the big leagues however didn't quite go as planned. Suffering a couple injuries, Gallo never quite developed the way the Cardinals wanted, and he was traded to the Brewers as a part of a package for superstar pitcher Alfredo Sanchez earlier this month. While it appears that his control may never come around, he still has the ability to be a serviceable back of the rotation arm, and could still yet develop his stuff further.
So what makes him interesting…?
Gallo is 5'8", 170 lbs. And can throw 101mph.
In the MLB this year, there are 7 pitchers who average 98+mph fastballs (20 IP minimum):
Jordan Hicks: 6'2", 185 lbs
Aroldis Chapman: 6'4", 212 lbs
Tayron Guerrero: 6'8", 210 lbs
Seranthony Dominguez: 6'1", 185 lbs
Joe Kelly: 6'1", 190 lbs
Ryne Stanek: 6'4", 215 lbs
Felipe Vazquez: 6'2", 210 lbs
You get the picture. The trend right now in the MLB is for taller, bigger pitchers that throw hard. Gallo is somehow able to get that velocity, despite his lack of size.
Now, to be fair, the PBL universe seems to be different than the MLB's, as there are a number of shorter and lighter pitchers that seem to be able to survive (and thrive) in the league. But regardless, Gallo is still exceptional. The thought of somebody his size throwing a baseball 100mph+ boggles my mind. He is definitely going to be a player that I keep an eye on the next few years in Milwaukee!
