Hey Sean, I played high school ball with Tyler O'Neill, so I've been following his minor league progress from afar.. With the addition of Ozuna and what seems to be a surplus of outfielders, do you have any insight into what the Cardinals' plan for him is?

That's pretty awesome! You wouldn't happen to be friends with him would you? He looked pretty jacked from what I could tell, it looks like he's hit the gym hard this offseason. He's still young, and most likely will start the year off in AAA. Many within the organization compare him to Randal Grichuk, tremendous power but needs to cut down on his strikeouts. Trading away Stephen Piscotty and Magneuris Sierra helps his chances at cracking the MLB roster, but he also could be used as a trade piece to fill a need later in the year. If Toronto decides to trade Donaldson at some point, I would think O'Neill would be one of the players discussed in that trade.

I only played on the same team with him for one summer for 15U nationals, and haven't really talked to him since then.. He hit a ball about 400 feet off me though once a couple years after that when I missed my spot with a fastball... I've still never seen a ball hit that hard. His power was incredible even in high school.

Tyler O'Neill): That trade was my least favorite of the many Jerry has made. Was really looking forward to seeing Tyler in the bigs as a Mariner.

I was surprised that the Cardinals got that quality of player for Marco Gonzales. Gonzales has a good change up but hasn't been right since getting called up to the bigs.

Yeah, me too. But, the M's philosophy from top to bottom is to "control the zone" for both pitchers and batters so I see why they did it. Tyler may not have been doing too well with that and they must have seen something in Gonzales.

That makes some sense. I know that once he was traded, he really took off.
I tried looking up his split stats but for some reason Baseball Reference has the combined stats but not separate between Tacoma and Memphis.

And just like that, they make a move to improve the club.
Tyler O'Neill's chances of making the team out of Spring Training just skyrocketed.

He is a career 107 OPS+ player, so his stats tell me he is slightly above average. Are you glad the Cards got rid of him, if only to give others a chance? Wasn't he sent to low class A last year to work on his swing? What kind of player was he when he returned?

He has tremendous power and can play all three OF positions well. The knock on Grichuk is his inconsistency at the plate. He's been given every opportunity to take a starting spot but hasn't been able to hold one.
I like the move a lot, and do not dislike Grichuk. That being said, the Cardinals needed more depth in the pen and managed to get a decent prospect.
Grichuk was going to be at best the 4th OF. His spot opening up gives other younger players a shot like Harrison Bader and Tyler O'Neill.

Thanks bud, sounds like the type of deal where a player was ready to have a change of scenery and Toronto is a home run park for power hitters. Hoping Greene works out for you guys while Grichuk gives us some power. What is the greatest fact I know about Grichuk? In the Mike Trout draft in 2009, the Angels had two draft picks, 24 and 25. Grichuk was selected before Mike Trout, by the Angels with their 24th pick, then used the 25th pick (compensation for the Yankees signing Teixeira) on Mike Trout. lol
