Last season, Jose Vera broke the PBL record for the youngest player to ever hit 150 HR at the ripe old age of 23 years old and 54 days. After a hot start to the 2045 season, Vera now sits 8 HR shy of 200 for his career. Going into 2045, Vera needed 15 HR to reach the 200 mark, which based on his past performance many analysts predicted he would reach the 200 mark sometime around the All-Star break. The current MLB record is held by Mel Ott who reached the mark at 25 years, 144 days old. Ott is the youngest National League player to reach the mark. In the American League, Jimmie Foxx is the youngest player to hit 200 homers at the age of 25 years, 266 days old.
The analysts' early season prediction has a chance to be busted even earlier in the season, and it's been primarily because of Vera's damage against LHP. So far in his career, his splits against lefties have been drastically lower than his production against RHP. That isn't the case this season. Vera actually is hitting better against LHP than RHP to start the year, batting .333./.379/.741 against them compared to .286/.357/.612. This most likely will normalize throughout the season, but if Vera can continue mashing LHP then the rest of the NL will definitely take notice.

Jose Vera hit career HR 199 and 200 against Pittsburgh SP Ray Berry on Saturday May 13th, 2045. In doing so, Vera broke the MLB/PBL record for the youngest player to ever hit 200 career HR at age 24 and 281 days.
During his postgame press conference Vera was asked what this accomplishment meant to him, "Only 710 to go."
So is it even realistic for Vera to have a shot at the all-time record? Sotan Kono's 909 HR in 23 seasons comes out to 39.52 HR per season. Vera has only hit over that mark in one season as a professional, however Vera debuted at age 19 and Kono at age 22. That's where this debate gets interesting. After Kono's first full season, he hit 28 HR. After Vera's age 22 season, he had 151 career HR. Kono was in his age 26 season when he hit the 200 HR career mark.
Obviously longevity, health, and luck play a large role in what happens moving forward with Jose Vera, but no active player seems to have as good of a shot to chase that record.

I love watching history play out before our very eyes. Will he do it? That is the fun, the journey of it and I will be watching! In the off-season, keep him away from the kitchen (sharp knives), household projects (hire a contractor) and keep him away from bars (fights, breaking a leg dancing etc.). Good luck to Mr. Vera, who has had a very good start to his PBL career!
