Texas Rangers drafted well in 2038. Comp picks from departing free agents and not signing previous picks meant extra shots at good players. A number of them have panned out. The '38 draft has had a big part in shaping the '45 Rangers. Here are the notable players from that class.
1-7th overall Alan Mosley, OF/1B Good all around and can play four spots. 8.8 career WAR
1-20th overall Jose Sanchez, OF First player of this group to reach the majors but his skills declined pretty precipitously after his first few years of pro ball. Put up 6.3 WAR for Texas between 2039-2043
1--supplemental rd--1st pick--31st overall Larry Martinez, 3B Slow developing prospect has been involved in two big trades in last two seasons; the first sent him and three other prospects to Cleveland for RHP Dave Badenho and RHP Jeremy Harden.
1--supplemental round--38th overall Al Lomond, LF Team leader, clutch hitter, career .309 hitter, 7.8 career WAR
2--60th overall Brandon O'Slattery, RF Led league in hits, doubles, total bases and extra base hits last year. 8.1 career WAR
3--81st overall Guillermo Morales, RP Hard thrower put up 1.6 WAR in 85 IP last year after struggling as a rookie
3--106th overall Javier Martinez, RP Coming off injury, he's been a very effective reliever for a few years now. 5.7 career WAR
4--130th overall Craig Klein, SP Posted a 4 WAR season with 14 wins last year for Texas
6--193rd overall Jeff Ray, SP In addition to his name sounding like saying Jeffrey in the sassiest way possible, he is a very talented if inconsistent righty for the Rangers, posting 5.7 career WAR
7--225th overall Brent Miner, RP Traded to Toronto a few years back, he saved 35 games for Carolina last year with solid numbers.
10--321st overall Doug Jones, 3B Now mired in AAA, he hit .315 with a 108 OPS+ as a rule V draftee of the Yankees in 2043.
11--353rd overall Joe Cote, RHP Great stuff, needs to learn how to find the plate. Traded to Detroit before the 2044 season, looking to make their roster
14--449th overall Tim Hopki, 3B Versatile if unspectacular defensively with great patience. He was traded to St Louis for the 3rd rounder that netted RHP Don Donaldson, himself later dealt to Cleveland with Larry Martinez for current Opening Day SP Badenho
25--769th overall Walt Seals, DH Seals is a lumbering left handed bat who has a 128 career OPS+ versus right handed pitching and has been a big performer in the playoffs each of the last two seasons. Not bad for a 25th round pick
