With just one game left in April - I thought this would a good time to take a look at the Warhounds and see where we are.
At 11-12 Carolina has a deep lineup and is 2nd in NL in batting average and 3rd in onbase percentage. Veteran Warhounds Marcos Pena .317 5 homers 15 rbis, Kwan-Cheol Nang .303 5 hrs 26 rbis and Brian Merritt .351 batting average along with free agent pickup Porter Wilson 7 homeruns are fueling a potent offense. And on the mound Rich Hebson 4-1 2.29 and Mark Aubin 3-0 2.97 form a potent one-two punch at the top of the rotation.
So why are the Warhounds 1 game under .500 through the first month?
The bullpen which I thought at the start of the season would be strength has been a mess. Numerous games have slipped away in the middle innings as one reliever after another comes in to give up big hits. In addition the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation have been a disaster, going 1-4 7.52 in 7 starts.
Looking ahead to May, Carolina has a grueling schedule - playing against 5 first place teams - The Reds, Pirates, Braves, Dodgers and Angels. We will be lucky if we are not double digits out of the NL South lead by time June comes around. I will also be keeping an eye on Triple A SS Dale Miles who is batting .340 and make a strong case for playing time with the big club.
Stay tuned for further updates throughout the season.
