**** This contract may be having a negative impact on the team.
***** Severe Albatross potential on every level.
Baltimore Orioles
**** (No change) Shawn Parker (SP)
- $38 Mill through 2041.
- It’s sad whenever injuries hasten the transition from greatness to mediocrity. I think he still has something left in the tank, but he’ll never hit those crazy seasons of his youth again.
*** (+1 star) Bob Phillips (SP)
- $36.18 Mill through 2041.
- $12.06 Mill player option in 2042.
- Significantly less damaged than Parker, but still missed all of last year. He remains an injury risk even though he still has all his tools left.
** (No change) Bryant Cheney (OF)
- $67.5 Mill through 2043.
- Injuries kept him from repeating his magnificent 2037 season. He may have a problem with being chronically hurt.
* (No change) Herb Griffith (LF)
- $60 Mill through 2042.
- Has been ole reliable for the O’s. One thing worth mentioning, this guy’s a pretty poor fielder who should probably transition to 1B or DH.
* (-1 star) Tim Hartigan (SP)
- $59 Mill through 2042.
- $18 Mill team option in 2043 with a $4.5 Mill buyout.
- $19 Mill team option in 2044 with a $5 Mill buyout.
- Last year he led the league in BABIP with 0.231, making him one lucky bastard. It’s kind of backhanded compliment to be the leader in a stat which you have absolutely no power to replicate.
Boston Red Sox
*** (New) Wang Liu (2B)
- $84 Mill through 2044.
- Liu was just a portion of the Red Sox monster free agent spending spree this off season. He’s got defense, speed, and hits for average. But still, this is the one signing that has me little suspicious. Just hate the length of it at his age.
** (New) Jimmy Smith (SP)
- $88.68 Mill through 2042.
- Fact: Jimmy Smith’s third pitch is a pretty crappy slider. Other fact: That doesn’t seem to matter very much because he is a powerhouse.
* (No change) Chuck Glendenning (1B)
- $19 Mill through 2039.
- $19 Mill player option in 2040.
- I think he’s slightly overpaid. He’d be a real steal at 15 million or so. The fact that his batting average is nothing special is overwhelmed by the fact that he has virtually no other flaws in his game.
* (-1 star) Francisco Perez (SP)
- $53.7 Mill through 2041.
- $17.9 Mill vesting option in 2042 after 160 IP.
- $19.9 Mill vesting option in 2043 after 160 IP.
- He's back to his old form, and it's pretty damn impressive. Maybe it was the magic of the Green Monster, but he had a magically low number of home runs allowed with a grand total of 8.
* (No change) Manny Cabrerra (C)
- $44 Mill through 2040.
- Promised Role: Starting Lineup.
- Wanna know something weird? Cabrerra is perhaps the best fielding catcher you’ll be able to find, but even he only has a +3.7 ZR. I wish there was a stat that showed how (or if) catchers could affect pitching.
* (No change) Markus Price (SP)
- $31.14 Mill through 2040.
- So I guess it’s not enough to have one 7 or 8 WAR pitcher on the staff. No no no. The Commish needs both Markus Price AND Jimmy Smith. Boy am I glad to be playing in the AL West.
Chicago White Sox
***** (+1 star) Pat Beard (SP)
- $36.48 Mill through 2041.
- Pitcher award bonus: $2 Mill.
- Good news: You won’t have to worry about spending money on that pitcher award bonus! Bad news: He’s barely a replacement level reliever anymore.
*** (No change) Jerome Reynolds (RF)
- $105 Mill through 2043.
- Hitter award bonus: $3 Mill.
- Losing Reynolds for the season didn’t stop the White Sox from advancing to the post season last year. He came back in time for the playoffs but just didn’t look right. Hopefully a restful off season will have him back at peak form.
** (No change) Ryan Schneider (SP)
- $25.5 Mill through 2041.
- Last year wasn’t great for him and it’s really hard to determine why… Just didn’t miss the bat as much as he usually does. Still, he remains a very tradable contract.
* (No change) Bruce Peak (C)
- $57.2 Mill through 2043.
- $11.4 Mill player option in 2044.
- Hitter award bonus: $1 Mill.
- I think it’s fair to guess that he won’t routinely bat .303 like he did in 2037. I think his 2038 season (34 HRs, .269 average) is more respective of his skills. Still, pretty impressive.
* (No change) John MacGamwell (OF)
- $53.25 Mill through 2041.
- $18 Mill player option in 2042.
- It’s funny that for John ‘Big Stick’ MacGamwell, his bat is probably the third most important part of his game after his speed and defense. He’s so fast!
Cleveland Indians
** (-1 star) Domingo Quintana (SP)
- $45.5 Mill through 2041.
- Moved back into the starting rotation and the batters just couldn’t send him out of the park. Only 9 homeruns allowed in 32 starts is absurdly low. Wasn’t enough to keep him in Miami, though.
* (-1 star) Zach Porter (SP)
- $64 Mill through 2041.
- Pitcher Award Bonus: 1 Mill.
- Last year was a career year for Porter in almost every respect. Career highs in strikeouts and innings pitched, and career lows in ERA, WHIP and BB/9.
Colorado Rockies
**** (New) Cris Padino (SP)
- $20 Mill through 2039.
- $20 Mill vesting option in 2040 after 170 IP.
- $20 Mill vesting option in 2041 after 160 IP.
- Promised Role: Starting Pitcher.
- Pitcher Award Bonus: $3 Mill.
- Don’t let his contract vest. Don’t let his contract vest. Don’t let his contract vest. Don’t let his contract vest. Don’t let his contract vest. Don’t let his contract vest. Don’t let his contract vest. Maybe now I’ll remember.
*** (No change) Bruce Hayes (3B)
- $21 Mill through 2040.
- $11 Mill team option in 2041 with a $5.5 Mill buyout.
- Was headed for another great year, but became one of the many Rockies players who spent massive amounts of time on the DL. He hurt himself three separate times!
*** (+2 stars) Donald Martinez-Esteves (SS)
- $20 Mill through 2040.
- Promised Role: Starting Lineup.
- I feel like this contract is coming to the end of it’s worthwhile life. He’s scraping by on his ability to pick up walks and defend SS pretty well.
** (No change) Rich Thornton (2B)
- $22.89 Mill through 2041.
- $7.63 Mill team option in 2042.
- Won’t ever lead the league in average again, but he is a cheap cheap cheap option at the weak second base position.
* (No change) Tommy Lewis (CF/LF)
- $17.5 Mill through 2040.
- $8.75 vesting option in 2041 after 100 PA.
- Traded in some average for power last year while putting up +10.9 ZR at centerfield. One weird thing… I realized I meant to make his vesting option to occur after 100 games started, not 100 plate appearances. Oopsy. Guess that’s three guaranteed years.
Detroit Tigers
Detroit needs some long term contracts, stat! I have no idea who is even going to be playing on this team next year.
Houston Astros
** (New) Carlos Martinez (RP)
- $21 Mill through 2040.
- Player Opt Out after 2040.
- $31.5 Mill through 2043
- $10.5 Mill player option in 2044.
- Promised Role: Reliever.
- I don’t know about our old pal the Vampire, but if I were a reliever there is absolutely no way I’d opt out of a contract with six guaranteed years. But that’s just me. I’m just a fan of receiving 60 million dollars.
Kansas City Royals
**** (New) Winston Henderson (CF)
- $27 Mill through 2041.
- $8 Mill team option in 2042 with a $2 Mill buyout.
- I suppose it wouldn’t be such a bad contract for a stellar centerfielder, but this guy should never be allowed out of Left. If he’s costing his team as many runs as he scores it’s just not worth it.
Los Angeles Angels
*** (No change) Francisco Serrano (1B)
- $24 Mill through 2040.
- Opt out after 2040.
- $24 Mill through 2042.
- Was hurt a good portion of last year and never really got into a groove. It’s just so strange with players who are completely blank slates. How are you supposed to determine their relative worth?
** (-1 star) Eduardo Sardina (SP)
- $17 Mill through 2040.
- Walks very few batters, at a rate of 1 BB/9. On the other had he gets sent out of the yard a little more than you’d like. Hasn’t outlived his usefulness quite yet.
** (New) Thomas Kershner (3B)
- $21 Mill through 2040.
- It’s pretty much a bonus if he hits anything above .250, but he does walk a ton. Frankly he isn’t a great third baseman, but he’s more or less holding his own in the hot corner.
** (+1 star) Chris Frazier (SS)
- $24.39 Mill through 2041.
- Has problems with left-handed pitching, but was more than capable of making it up from the other side in 2038. One question: How much longer will he remain a shortstop?
New York Yankess
***** (+1 star) Casey Williams (DH)
- $171 Mill through 2044.
- Hitter Award Bonus: $1 Mill.
- The worst part is that Williams isn’t a bad hitter. He could be an average DH on any team in the league. A steal at 10 million, and slightly overpriced at 15 million. Unfortunately he is a devastating albatross at nearly 30 million dollars per year.
***** (+1 star) Gregorio Cruz (RP)
- $12 Mill through 2039.
- $12 Mill player option in 2040.
- Can’t pitch in the majors anymore. That’s all there is to it.
**** (No change) Jorge Hernandez (LF)
- $50 Mill through 2040.
- $25 Mill player option in 2041.
- Was hurt a lot last year, but even if he hadn’t been he just isn’t a 25 million dollar player anymore.
**** (-1 star) Troy McClure (SP)
- $97 Mill through 2043
- I gotta say that despite my trepidation, last year’s Troy McClure experiment seems to have been a successful one in terms of WAR. Still overpaid in my opinion.
*** (+1 star) Rich Carr (LF/RF)
- $51.5 Mill through 2042.
- $13 Mill player option in 2043.
- I came to a shocking realization about Carr. He’s still a decent player, but he has spent at least a week on the DL in every year of his career since 2031. He is guaranteed to hit the DL at least once in 2039.
** (-1 star) Armando Hernandez (2B/RF)
- $24.92 Mill through 2040.
- $12.46 Mill player option in 2041.
- Don’t see a lot of second base and right field combinations, but here he is. If the Yankees had the options to replace him I’m sure they would move him to second full time. But I don’t think they do.
** (+1 star) Rob McCoy (2B/SS/3B)
- $65 Mill through 2043.
- $13 Mill player option in 2044.
- It’s always a little scary to have more than a year or two guaranteed to a player with a spotty injury history. Last year was a perfect example of the risks.
The A’s have reduced any long term players from their payroll in a vicious dictatorial purge. Truly their GM is history’s greatest monster.
Seattle Mariners
***** (No change) Chris Thornton (LF)
- $88 Mill through 2041.
- $30 Mill vesting option in 2043 after 500 PA.
- It’s time to face the fact that Thornton will never, ever, ever be worth $30 Million a year. Ever. One more time. Ever.
** (-1 star) Andrew Everett (SP)
- $59 Mill through 2042.
- Kept it in the park a little bit better last year, and it allowed for a bounce back season. It’s really hard to spend a full year pitching in the majors and put up a negative WAR. Let’s hope he never does it again.
** (No change) Tom Payne (SP)
- $41 Mill through 2042.
- Just had bad luck last year. Got hit hard, went fewer innings and walked a ton of guys. Still has value, but I still think Seattle should have tried to trade him for prospects before 2038. When you’re a rebuilding team you have to turn surprise successes into profit before they regress to the mean.
Tampa Bay Rays
* (-1 star) Jason Wilson (C)
- $62 Mill through 2040.
- $29 Mill player option in 2041.
- Hitter award bonus: $5 Mill.
- It’s hard for me to fathom it, but this guy is a legitimate, honest to god, 30 million dollar per year player. You just don’t expect to see guys who can live up to such exorbitant contracts.
* (-1 star) Terrence Henderson (1B)
- $128.8 Mill through 2044.
- Last year he lead the league in OBP (.426), SLG (.628) and, logically enough, OPS (.1054). My only concern is how backloaded this contract is. I can imagine a world where the Rays regret giving him nearly $26 million in 5 years.
Texas Rangers
The commitment-phobic Rangers are not ready to settle down with a long term contract. SAD!
Toronto Blue Jays
*** (New) Jake Simms (SP)
- $35 Mill through 2042.
- I think this is a case of wishful signing. Simms has given the White Sox five years of near identical results, and there’s never been any sign that he’s a ten million dollar man.
