Apparently the plucking of SHELTON from the Cards was indeed too good to be true. The day after I received a frantic call from the STL GM wondering how the heck I had pulled that off. If he could have seen my face on the other end (a rather puzzled look) he would have howled! But he kept going and tossed out an idea of how he could immediately return him to his own system. I listened.
It didn't take long to come to an agreement that would see Shelton and my highest paid (one year left) player RF Patrick MARTIN head to STL in exchange for a reliever Anatasio MEDINA, the Cards 2nd Round Pick and another piece. The pick cinched it as I value that about the same as Shelton really.
Medina, while he technically has three years left at slightly less money than Martin, although an opt-out may end his time with the Expos after this season (we'll see), can help me. While a reliever on the Cards, or any other team for that matter, with a horrible third pitch, he was signed with the promise of starting. Needless to say, he's really mad at the moment. On the Expos we'll definitely give him that shot to see if he can start some games and actually perform in that role.
The STL GM was quite pleased when we eventually ended our call. Happy to help out! What goes around, comes around...
We have also added some veteran presence this past week. 1B Francisco CAMACHO played for me a couple of years ago in LA. While completely out of baseball and resting on the FA list this past season and likely more a DH now, we'll give him a look. He was a doubles-machine, with some pop, while with the Angels. Tough to stay healthy, but may give us a bit of a threat in the lineup.
I may have overspent on SS Esteban Lopez, but he too is a veteran and able to play several positions. We'll see which infield role he'll play, but his bat will also be a big help.
And, as I fully expected, my lingering offers to some pitching are now coming back with "better offers elsewhere" (all the more reason to jump at the Medina offer to at least have a bird in hand). Again I am impressed with the quality of the teams with whom I seem to be negotiating for these arms, but it's time to move my puny budget along to another choice in each case! Good luck to them, wherever they sign.
